YEAR 7 NEWS…

Welcome to our first College Connect Year 7 News!

We have started the year with a flying start with many more exciting opportunities ahead for the Year 7 students. It has been a very busy start to the year with; school photos, our first virtual Academic assembly, Year 7 welcome pastoral day, the beginning of Wednesday afternoon sport and sign-ups for choir, netball, soccer and run squad.

The first few weeks at any new school can be exciting and scary all at the same time. Some students embrace it with open arms and others are a little nervous about what is to come and where they need to be. I hope that now in Week 6 (four at school) your child is starting to feel more comfortable at St Mary’s and is receiving the love and care they require to engage in learning.

Students have participated in a few rounds of sport for the year already and no doubt look forward to the upcoming events. Please make sure your child knows what sport they are doing each Wednesday as this changes for most Year 7 students who are not in academy sports.

The Year 7 assessment planners are now available on the College website under learning enrichment. Using this document, I encourage students to record their due dates for assignments and exams in their diaries on the right-hand side.  Printing the assessment calendar off and placing it on the fridge at home is another great place to remind your child when they have an upcoming assessment. It also assists you in providing support and assistance to your child around assessment time. Please also note this can change with unforeseen circumstances due to school events or COVID situations that pop up, so please check in regularly with the online document. I will also keep the students up to date with the document in community home form on a Wednesday morning.

Over the last few weeks, you will have become familiar with the College diary. This is an important organisational tool students will use to communicate between school and home. All homework and assessment should be recorded each day in the diary. If your child says they have no homework, then please feel free to ask to see the diary to check.

Even if your child does not have homework, they should have recorded what they did for that lesson so revision can take place. At the end of each week, I ask that you take the time to look over your child’s diary for any teachers' notes and homework completion. When you have done this please sign at the top of the diary to acknowledge it has been cited. It is your child’s responsibility to show you the diary to make sure this happens. All Year 7 students have been informed of this request and know to have this completed for Monday morning.

Last week we celebrated Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) and Ash Wednesday. This is the beginning of Lent, a time of preparation for Easter through prayer, penance, almsgiving, and repentance of sins. Students will do some activities in religious education lessons and fundraising for Caritas Australia as part of the Lenten season. I look forward to your support with some of our fundraisers this term.

A reminder that if you have any questions or queries, be sure to contact your pastoral mentor as the first point of call. If the concern regards a subject area, please contact the teacher of that subject.
