News from Art

Prep students have been learning about one of the elements of art which is colour, specifically the three primary colours of blue, red and yellow. They have been undertaking activities using these three colours while simultaneously learning about the different types of equipment and materials in the art room. Students have created portraits of themselves using oil pastels and a watercolour paint wash.

They learned how to collect equipment safely and to clean it thoroughly before returning it to its correct place. Students also created a colourful chameleon using cellophane, which they overlapped to create the colours orange, green and purple.

After reviewing the rules and expectations of the Art Room, JLC students began creating an animal collage using scrap paper. They could choose any animal or insect they liked and they also were able to select their own colour for the background of their artwork. Students were shown how to select appropriate papers for different parts of their animal and its environment. They were also taught how to cut and rip the paper to create different kinds of edges to show the texture of trees, grass, fur and scales etc. Their final pieces demonstrated incredible creativity and flair which can be seen hanging up in the JLC classroom. Currently, the students are working on their next project which is a multimedia collage. Students are creating layers using different media and when complete they will cut out shapes and arrange them to create an abstract artwork.

The students in Year 3/4 and 4/5/6 have begun the year with creating sculptures. We discussed how to build a sculpture using an armature which acts like a skeleton for support. Straws, newspaper and masking tape were also used to help add structure and form the shape of the animal’s features. Students were required to draw their design in their sketchbook giving consideration to how they were going to construct their 3-dimensional sculpture. Once their drawing was approved, students could begin construction. This hands-on approach encourages students to problem solve and improves their fine motor skills. Once the basis of their sculpture was complete, students began to cover their piece in Modroc. Modroc is a bandage-like material covered with plaster which when moistened adheres to a surface and dries hard. It is great for making sculptures and can be painted over and decorated with other embellishments.

Kind Regards
