News from Yr 4/5/6

Time, Writing & Wordle

For the next two weeks in Maths, the Year 4/5/6 will be focusing on the topic of time and learning how to compare and convert between units of time.

We have been playing a board game where whatever square you land on you have to answer a converting time question. These questions range from “How many years are in a century?” to “How many hours are in 3 months?”

We have been talking about the relationships between the 12 hour time system and 24 hour time system. This will lead us into learning how to read, use and create timetables that use both 12 hour and 24 hour time systems.

In writing, we have been learning how to plan our writing effectively making sure we include characters, setting, problems that build tension and a solution. We also try to

include descriptive language to make sure our stories are as interesting as possible.

Lately, we have focused on creating an exciting start to our story which we call sizzling starts. Here is an example of one from Allison.

The snowy, white clouds formed into sad, grey ones. Droplets dropping one by one started getting heavy as lightning and thunder crashed on the ground. She dashed to her house, slipping on a gigantic puddle, and down she fell, hitting her head on the concrete.

Keeping up with the current trend that is sweeping not just the nation but the world, is the game called Wordle. To warm up before our literacy class, we have been playing Wordle where you need to guess a random 5 letter word. You have 6 attempts to try and guess the word. Each time you guess a word, the box containing each letter changes colour based on how accurate your attempt has been.  A black box means the letter is not in the word, a yellow box means the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot and a green box means that the letter is in the word and in the correct spot.

Wordle is similar to Mastermind but with words. The students have been enjoying this game and are learning new words to use in their writing as well as to increase their vocabulary.

If you would like to play Wordle with your child at home just google Wordle and click on the New York Times link.

Kind Regards
