INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY MORNING TEA WITH SARAH CONNOLLY

On Thursday 3rd March, I took our female student leaders to locally owned Tarneit cafe Little Growling for Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly’s annual International Women’s Day morning tea. The girls showed great confidence and charisma when speaking to and networking with other local students, MPs and other community members. We heard from Sarah and the first female Attorney General, Jill Hennessy, who each spoke about their own interpretation of the #breakthebias theme, and shared stories of the challenges and successes of being a woman in public life, and the biases and barriers that come with it.

Our student leaders encourage all of us to take steps to #breakthebias, particularly by calling out sexist and misogynistic attitudes, comments or stereotyping when they arise.

Passionate, clever and inspiring young women are all around at Tarneit Senior College, and it was a pleasure to accompany them to an inspiring and energising morning.

Reflections from students

Sarah's story of how she was told to not take being educated in her career field seriously, and that really struck me. Women are always expected to take care of the household, raise/bear children and maintain the family, even in the 21st century. Though it is not overt, it is still an expectation & personally it empowered me to be the 'man' in my future family life & not have to stick to this stereotype of being the family glue

- Khushi Parikh, Chirnside House Captain

The way that the two composed themselves and related themselves to us, made them seem more 'real' in a sense, and proved that anyone can achieve positions of power that they want to obtain. It was extremely motivating and inspiring, and would 100% recommend for any future leaders!

What stuck with me is when Jill started talking about how women were always put into the lower paying jobs or lower paying positions. We could break the bias by placing ourselves into positions that are normally male dominated. I got that men should also have the same ability and the same amount of care of children as women so women have the same amount of opportunities as men.

Penrose House Captain

I actually found myself fully confident that I'll be successful if I try harder. I won't let my inner thoughts belittle me just like it did in the past. I will fight until my last breath and show the world that the more you belittle women's strength you find yourself in the lion's den. A big shout out to all the women in the world: shine bright like a diamond in the sky.

International Women's Day

We have been celebrating International Women's Day all week. Students have been discovering the journey of women and celebrating their achievments and talents in pastoral care.

We are proud of all the amazing and inspiring women here at Tarneit Senior College.
