New Metrics

This year, St Joseph’s College will continue its partnership with Melbourne University and their New Metrics for Success Research Program. New Metrics for Success is a collaborative research partnership between The University of Melbourne and 40 ‘first-mover’ schools to create assessment tools, influence the development of policy and accelerate change. In this partnership, leading educators are working with academic experts to reimagine schooling in Australia.

As part of this program, New Metrics participants are creating assessment frameworks for a range of competencies and capabilities beyond the traditional scope of education. Moving beyond traditional classroom knowledge and skills, the New Metrics partnership is developing tools to assess eight key areas:

  • Connectedness
  • Ethics
  • Learner Agency
  • Communication
  • Character
  • Citizenship
  • Quality Thinking
  • Collaboration

This year we will be working with our wider school community including students, teachers, parents and our local community to reimagine and rewrite our Graduate Outcomes for our students. Our new Graduate Outcomes will reflect the competencies and capabilities we believe are important for students to leave St Joseph’s College with as young adults embarking into the world.

Career profiling

Now more than ever, the career options for young people are more complex and varied. To ensure that our career program continues to meet the needs of our students, this week we will be conducting the The Career Development Quality Benchmark (CDQB) which is designed to assist those who provide career education programs and services for young people. The CDQB provides career practitioners, leaders in schools and teachers with a practical tool for self-assessing career development programs and services and for developing action plans for improvement.

We would like to thank families, students and staff who have taken the time to complete the career benchmarking surveys and look forward to the information and insights that will guide the continual improvement of our Career Education Program here at St Joseph’s College.

Quality Teaching Rounds

I am pleased to confirm that our school will also be participating in an exciting new research project into a type of teacher professional development called ‘Quality Teaching Rounds'.

The research is being undertaken by the University of Newcastle. Four teachers from our school, as well as some of their students, will be invited to participate. Invitations will be sent out to the relevant classes in due course. Student participation is entirely voluntary.

For further information, please contact the research manager, Tim Dean, at qtr- vic@newcastle.edu.au or phone (02) 4985 4300.
