Ride 2 School

Friday March 25th is National Ride to School Day

We encourage all students to find an active means to travel to school on the day whether it is with a group of friends or parents. This could include a bike, scooter (non- electric scooter) or walking. If you live more than a couple of kilometres from school, why not drive part of the way and walk the last part of your journey.

All students who actively travel to school will go into the draw for a range of great prizes, including a $30 Rebel voucher, remote controlled car, scented highlighters and an aerial drone.

Students can also meet Mr. Spinks at the park opposite the Doncaster Bowling Club at 8:25am on the morning of Friday 25th and walk to school as part of our school walking bus.

There are many benefits for actively travelling to school.

Walking is good for children:

Walking is good for children’s physical health.

Regular physical activity builds and maintains healthy bones, muscles and joints.

Walking is also good for children’s mental health:

Physical activity helps reduce levels of stress, depression and anxiety and can be a good social activity. Walking to school also provides a great opportunity to build strong bonds in the community and enjoy increased social interaction. Take a look at your surroundings as you walk, what can see on your route to school?

Children that are active are more likely to continue healthy behaviours later in life.

Walking is good for schools:

Children who walk to school have been found to be more attentive and focused in class.

More children walking to school means less traffic congestion around the school and improved safety for the children. They will have greater a connection with their community and feel more independent, confident and in control of themselves too. They'll learn the route from home to school, which can boost their navigation skills, and they'll learn more about road safety. Once children are old enough to walk to school by themselves, they'll already have the confidence and the knowledge that they need to get there safely (and in time for their first lesson!).

Walking is good for the environment:

The environment also benefits because walking is a non-polluting and sustainable transport alternative.

Walking saves money

Finally, with the spiralling cost of petrol means walking also saves money!
