This week at DPS, we are acknowledging and celebrating cultural diversity week.

Victoria is known for its multiculturalism and is home to people from all corners of the world. Did you know that Victorians come from more than 200 countries, and collectively, we speak 260 languages and follow 135 different faiths? Therefore, cultural diversity is one of our greatest assets, including linguistic and faith-based diversity.

Schools play a critical role in strengthening cultural inclusion in our community. They provide an environment where acceptance of diversity, knowing other cultures and understanding global and local issues is developed and part of everyday life. I believe that schools can be a place where we can connect through culture and foster a sense of belonging, understanding and contribution.

Celebrating and acknowledging our cultural heritage is integral to developing intercultural understanding and expanding our knowledge of the world. For example, many of you may know that I was born in Toronto, Canada but what you may not know is that I am of Ukrainian heritage, as both my parents were born in Ukraine. I speak Ukrainian fluently, so I know all too well what it is like to attend a language school. I used to go to school every Saturday until I was 14 years old. To all the DPS children who are currently learning another language, I would like to encourage you to continue to embrace your studies. It may seem hard now, but you will be grateful for being able to speak another language, especially if that language connects with your heritage.

As Ukraine is in the headlines due to current events, acknowledging cultural diversity strikes a personal chord this year. However, I would also like to take this time to recognise that the recent events in Ukraine may bring up memories from the past and, in some cases, hardship for many of our families, as every country has a unique story and history.

I am hopeful that peace, tolerance and respect will prevail.

Cultural Diversity Week also reminds us of the importance of celebrating being Australian and having a deep respect for this beautiful land and people. I look forward to celebrating cultural diversity with our DPS students this Friday at our special assembly.
