HoL Cafe

What’s happening in the Hands-on Learning Café so far…

The students in the Hands-on Learning Café have hit the ground running!

On Thursday the 22nd and Friday the 23rd of March, our cafe students undertook Barista Training led by Sarah from Undercover Roasters. Sarah has had over 15 years’ experience in the hospitality industry and is an account manager for the coffee supplier we use in our H.o.L Café.

In groups of 4 or 5 people, each student had the opportunity to learn what the parts of the grinder and coffee machine are, what they are used for, how to pull shots of coffee, steam milk and how to make different types of coffee such as cappuccino, latte, espresso and flat whites.

Throughout these sessions, Sarah was able to share her experience in the hospitality industry with the students and how her career developed during this time. For just under two hours, the students asked multiple questions, refined their coffee making skills and had the privilege of producing some amazing coffee for the lucky staff of our school.

We are looking forward to seeing how these skills develop in the cafe going forward.

For the rest of term 2, we are looking forward to making some of our favourite recipes and to try new ones. German Spiced Plum Cake has been a recent new recipe and it was a hit with our cafe students and customers alike. Teachers are also being invited into the cafe to have our students teach them how to use the coffee machine and steam milk. This is a great way for the students to share their knowledge of their craft and connect with teachers in a different way. It also helps build confidence within the students and develop leadership skills.

So far, a very pleasing start to the term.
