WHERE CHILDREN LOVE TO BE

COMMUNITY BANK WINDSOR GRANT

It gives me great pleasure to announce that South Melbourne Park has been granted $5000 from the Community Bank Windsor for the purchase of reading books for classroom libraries. We thank Rotary Melbourne South (District 9800) for partnering with us in this project. A huge thank you to Yen (parent of Ethan (3-6H) and Jacob (1/2V) for submitting the grant application on the school’s behalf. Thank you to Katrina (parent of Scarlet (1/2A) for bringing this grant to our attention. I look forward to attending the award presentation night next week where successful projects will be acknowledged and grants will be presented.

CLASSROOM LIBRARIES

Below are photos of classroom libraries.  Classroom librariesplay a key role in providing access to books and promoting literacy; they have the potential to increase student motivation, engagement, and achievement and help students become critical thinkers and analytical readers.  Research tell us that classroom libraries support children's daily independent reading of self-selected books that meet their personal and recreational reading interests. Further, an in-class library offers a setting for students to quietly read aloud and discuss a book with a peer or the teacher. At South Melbourne Park we have introduced classroom libraries in every classroom, we are at the beginning stages of this project and the grant from Community Bank Windsor will help supplement the purchasing of reading books.

THE NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY (NAPLAN

This week our students in years 3 and 5 completed NAPLAN. NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken every year.

At South Melbourne Park Primary School, we educate the whole child, and we value a diverse range of learning opportunities for children. It's important to understand that NAPLAN is a 'snapshot' of a child's learning. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process, they do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance.

OPEN DAY - MAY 31ST

Parents/carers and visitors are invited to visit classrooms on Monday May 31st from 9:30-10:30am where teachers and students will be showcasing literacy learning.  Following the classroom visit parents/carers and visitors are invited to morning tea in the gym where our choir will be singing.  We hope to see many families and friends.

FAREWELL SARAH ATKINS

We say farewell to Sarah Atkins who is taking maternity leave.  Sarah is one of our amazing integration aides who works tirelessly assisting students in our inclusion program, she will be sadly missed. We wish her all the very best and look forward to her visiting the school with her lovely new baby boy.

CLEARWAY SIGN AT THE FRONT OF THE SCHOOL

You are reminded that Parks Victoria have erected Clearway signs at Albert Park Drive South.  The front of the school is no longer a drop and go parking space. All parking during the clearway period is at Lakeside Car Park in Aughtie Drive. We ask parents to PLEASE observe these road laws in the interest of safety.
