From the Principal

Dear Killara Families

Sports, community service and wonderful classroom learning experiences have all contributed to an amazing start to Term 2.

Peer Support

Many of our students dedicate their time towards helping others. This happens both inside and outside of the school. During Week 2 we saw our Year 11 Peer Support leaders contributing towards enhancing the high school experience for our Year 7 students. This happened through role plays, scenario based learning and other fun activities. Our Year 7 students enjoyed this experience, and the smiles on their faces during these sessions reflected their appreciation and enjoyment. I thank our Year 11 Peer Support leaders and Ms Natalie Hill for her overall management and passion for this important transition program.

Student leadership and helping others

We have many students dedicating themselves towards community service outside of our school. Much of this is undertaken in a manner where students do not want public recognition, and consider this act of kindness as their contribution in being part of a community. Our student leadership groups work towards supporting numerous charities and student wellbeing initiatives to enrich our community. Examples of this include our SRC managing a fundraiser for the Waves of Wellness initiative last week. Another example from this week is our Social Justice Committee managing a successful trivia event on Tuesday evening. These events illustrate the empathetic and selfless outlook of our young people. Our future is in good hands when our young people maintain this mindset.

Well done Adi

During the recent school holidays, Adi D of Year 7 completed volunteer work with Kids Giving Back. Adi packed and prepared food that contributed towards meeting the needs of vulnerable people in our community. Well done Adi. Adi’s efforts and selfless attitude reflect the enthusiasm our young people have towards helping others.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

We have progressed in our journey towards identifying our Positive Behaviour for Learning values. These values include respect, ownership, learning and environment. These values will appear around the school and feature within educational programs. Positive Behaviour for Learning is a whole school positive psychology-based program that aims to empower students with explicit guidance on behaviour. In Week 5 we will commence implementing this program within our school canteen area. From this location, we aim to expand further across the school. I thank the entire PBL team, and in particular Mr Beach, Ms Williams and Mr Smith for their leadership. These values were determined based on data analysis from community feedback.

Traffic

We are experiencing congestion on Koola Avenue due to cars overflowing from the public carpark. If the carpark is full, please do not wait and block Koola Avenue. Our Kiss and Drop spaces have increased and this could be used for picking up and dropping off students. Please obey all road rules in support of student safety.
