Primary Co-Curricular

Well done to all the students involved in the Catholic Schools Cross Country event for their attitude and behaviour on the day!

Primary Co-Curricular Report

Another fortnight has come and gone and all of our teams have been battling away after school and on those cold Saturday mornings which all parents enjoy.

Soccer

The Primary A Soccer team has had to travel all over Adelaide the past two weeks, venturing to Woodcroft College at Morphett Vale and Trinity College at Gawler. Well done and thank you to all families for making the effort to travel to those fixtures. I know how much the travel can impact on your Saturday mornings so I appreciate the effort made to uphold the commitment to the team. The boys defeated Woodcroft but went down to Trinity.

The Primary B Soccer team was beaten heavily by a St Paul's side stacked with talent; however the boys never threw in the towel and gave up. Last weekend the boys were defeated by St Peter's in an even match. The scoreboard didn’t reflect the closeness of the game. Mr Niedzwiecki has been pleased with the group and their ability to improve and follow instructions.

The Year 3/4/5 team has faced off against St Andrew's and St Peter's with mixed results. There have been some good wins and some close losses for the boys. Numbers were stretched a little in the last round with numerous players unavailable, but the boys dug deep and put in some strong performances. This week the boys front up against St Peter's at Blackfriars.

Basketball

Mr Vo’s Year 6/7 basketball team defeated East Adelaide Red but suffered a one point loss to St Andrew's last week. Mr Vo was pleased with the boys’ resilience and attitude in the face of a heartbreaking and controversial loss. Keep up the good work, guys.

Mrs Rowley’s Year 4/5 team lost to Saints a fortnight ago but competed hard. Last week the boys were leading for the majority of the game but lost by a point in the dying seconds. Heartbreaker! Mrs Rowley was immensely proud of the boys and devastated that their continued efforts haven’t quite got the ultimate result.

Lacrosse

The boys were defeated by Burnside 11-9 a fortnight ago. They held the lead at half time but a 0-4 third quarter gave Burnside the lead; a lead they wouldn’t surrender. Last weekend the boys were jumped early by the Eagles and couldn’t claw back the deficit. To the boys' credit, they were undermanned and fatigued but continued to fight the game out until the end.

Intercol – Week 5

Blackfriars will be hosting CBC in the Primary Intercol during Week 5 (Friday 24/Saturday 25 August). Please see the fixtures below :

  • Primary A Soccer – Barton Tce East
  • Primary B Soccer – Barton Tce East
  • Year 3/4/5 Soccer – Blackfriars

These matches signal the final round of the soccer season. I encourage all boys to compete hard to but to do so in a respectful and sportsmanlike manner.

Catholic Schools Cross Country

On Thursday 9 August, 30 students from Year 4 - 7 competed in the Catholic Schools Cross Country Event in the Eastern Parklands. Although no student placed inside the top 10 in any division, the boys competed hard and gave it their best. For many students, it was their first cross country event and they will return again in 2019. For the Year 7 group, many of whom have been to multiple carnivals, it signalled the end of their Primary Cross Country participation.

Well done to all students involved for their attitude and behaviour on the day.

Many thanks to Mrs Petruzzella and Mr Hutt for their assistance and supervision on the day and to the Maintenance Team for setting up the marquee at the venue. It was much appreciated.

Anthony Troiani – The Trip of a Lifetime

Anthony Troiani (Year 7 Burke) has recently been selected by the West Ham United Football Club, England, to attend a training and development tour of England and Scotland in November/December this year.  During this time, he will receive specialised coaching by professional academy coaches and also play matches against several of the junior academy squads including those of West Ham United, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Stoke City, Rangers, Wolverhampton as well as others.  He will also have the opportunity to attend several EPL and Championship League matches and tour their stadiums and facilities.

The trip will provide Anthony with a fantastic opportunity and wonderful life experiences.

We congratulate Anthony on gaining selection to attend the West Ham United Academy and trust he will enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity.

I’m sure there will be many boys eager to hear of his experiences once he returns and we wish him well with his travels.

What an opportunity! Keep your eyes open for a report from Anthony on his return.
