Wear It Purple Day

Skittles Stand Out Group – Wear It Purple Day

The ‘Skittles’ Stand Out group have continued to meet during Monday lunchtimes, supported by Esmerelda from Wellbeing and Mr. Duhig Jones. This group is for students who want to promote inclusivity and tackle discrimination for LGBTQI+ people at school and within our community. In Term 3 the Skittles group worked hard to prepare for ‘Wear It Purple Day’ – a day Copperfield College celebrates every year to raise awareness of challenges faced by LGBTQI+ people and celebrate sexuality and gender diversity. We raised nearly $400 for the Minus18 charity and put on an awesome lunchtime party, which included creating a rainbow board of supportive messages and helpful facts to stay informed about. Thanks to all who participated in the day!

Drumbeat Program

In Term 4 a small group of Year 8 students were selected to participate in the Drumbeat program, led by Travis Walton from Brimbank Youth Services and co-facilitated by Esmerelda and Kellie from Wellbeing. The Drumbeat program ran for seven weeks, with students learning about Communication; Relationships; Identity and belonging; Bullying; Decision making; and Emotions, while also learning a new skill in drumming on Djembe drums. These students should be commended for their commitment, respectful behaviour, enthusiasm, and openness to reflect on social-emotional skills during the program. We celebrated the completion of the program with a pizza lunch and ‘Showcase’ to members of leadership staff who got to get involved in the drumming activities. Well done to Neil, Hayden, Kailen, Sam, Cooper, Benjamin,

Ryan, Nicholas and Izac for all your hard work.

Games Club

At Sydenham, Friday lunchtimes are for relaxing and having fun with board games at Games Club. Whether “Connect 4”, “UNO”, or “Cluedo” is your specialty or something else from the cupboard, there is always a fun game to play and friendly peers to play with. We celebrated the end of Term 4 with our famous ‘Bingo’ party with many prizes won! Any student wanting to get involved in 2020 please see Esmerelda or just turn up (in A9 off the library).

Ilbijerri Theatre Performance

In Term 3 Year 10 students were treated to a performance by Indigenous Theatre Company ‘Ilbijerri’ who performed the captivating play ‘Viral – Are you the cure?’ The performance raised awareness about Hepatitis, racism, and other social issues while also entertaining the audience. Thank you to our School Nurse Mick Malady for organising this.
