Peer Transition Support Program: Doncaster Primary School

This Peer Transition Support Program was facilitated by Gateway LLEN. The program aims to improve outcomes for young people (10-19 years old), by increasing opportunities for their participation, attainment and successful transitions in education, training or employment.

As part of the Peer Transition Support Program our year 8 students were invited to Doncaster Primary School (DPS) by the grade 6 students on Thursday, 13 June. The aim of this program is to support these students' transition from primary to secondary school. The DPS students prepared questions to ask our students. Some of the questions included queries about being late to class, devices, student lockers, detention, food available at the canteen, homework expectations, catching public transport and subject choices. Our year 8 students were able to confidently respond to these questions. We have since heard from DPS that their students are feeling much more prepared for next year and are excited to attend year 7 camp, to meet new friends and try new subjects.

Education Week: Doncaster Primary School

During Doncaster Primary School's Education Week, I was invited to present to the grade 6 students and some parents about careers and the future world of work. Some of the students' key takeaways were:

  • If you are not happy then it is not the job for you. Follow your dreams.
  • You need to experience a failure to experience success.
  • You do not have to be great to start. You have to start to be great.
