Maths matters

On Monday 2 September eight Year 7 students competed in the 2019 State-wide Mathematics Games Day. This was organised by the Mathematical Association of Victoria and held at Waverley Christian College in Narre Warren.

There were 60 teams competing and our students, who were competing for the first time, came 31st and 35th. It was a great day and the competition was fierce but remained friendly throughout. Congratulations to the participants: Sriya Amara, Hansika Chandrakumar, Kathy Gu, Akshaya Karthikeyan, Ojas Kumar, Julie Mathews, Emma Xu and Grace Zhu

Student report

Last week, eight Year 7 students left on a 45 min trip to Waverley Christian College in Narre Warren South to participate in the Maths Games. I was one of them! We got to interact with students from other schools and, working as a team, we solved challenging mathematical puzzles and problems. The day was designed not only for those with strong maths skills but for those who have a love for maths and like to strategise, be creative in their thinking and want to have a good time!

We all mostly enjoyed the teamwork activities because we were able to share our ideas with the team and spend time with our fellow friends. We were not there to win (we came 31st and 35th) but to enjoy our time competing against other school. We tried things we were nervous about (the one-on-one games) but realised that having this experience was a good thing and we were happy that we pushed ourselves out of our comfort zone. It sounds nerve-racking competing against one person from another school but it was actually very rewarding and entertaining, and a great opportunity to chat and make new friends at the same time. All participants should be proud of their positive approach and persistence! We had a great time and recommend this experience to future Year 7 students.

Thanks so much to Mr Woolcock for driving us and for his supervision.
