2020 Mobile Phone Policy -

Feedback from Parents & Students

On Wednesday, 13 November, the Wellbeing Action Team came together to discuss the new mobile phone policy that bans mobile phones in Victorian primary and secondary schools from term one, 2020. Here is some feedback from the discussion.

Parent perspectives:

  • It's an excellent idea and eliminates distraction.
  • I feel a bit nervous about the thought of non-contact.
  • It's a huge opportunity to remind students about other ways to communicate and socialise.
  • Phones are used to pay for canteen food and to look up Compass, so suitable alternatives need to be explored.
  • I'm looking forward to the ban as it will improve interaction and minimise distraction.
  • We need to educate kids more about suitable phone use.
  • What do I do if I need to speak to my child?
  • We understand that occasionally emergencies happen. If there is an emergency and it is absolutely necessary to communicate with your child between 9.00am and 3.15pm, you can contact the school and we will get a message sent out to your child’s class.
  • What about students with a significant health condition?

Student perspectives:

  • It's a good idea to help us concentrate/ focus.
  • It's difficult because we can't access Compass room changes.

This valuable discussion has been an excellent starting point for us to sort out any teething issues before the ban is enforced permanently next year.

We value your ongoing feedback around this issue, so please address any questions or concerns to Carly Sayer, Middle School Leader at:  sayer.carly.e@edumail.vic.gov.au or Ty Dennis, Senior School Leader at: dennis.tyran.t@edumail.vic.gov.au.

  • There will be exceptions and processes put in place for any student with a significant health condition. Documentation from specialists is required and a management plan will be arranged on a case-by-case basis.

SRC Planning Day -

Shaping up for 2020!

On Friday, 15 November, the group for next year’s Student Representative Council spent the day analysing and planning for a big 2020.

The day started with the team analysing where student voice and agency currently sits in our school. From this we were able to identify where would could add in an even greater level of impact on our school community.

A host of ideas and initiatives were debated and put forward by the group.

The second session of the day saw smaller groups focus on their areas of passion or the initiatives that sparked the most interest for them.

For the remainder of the day, these groups began researching and brainstorming ways in which they could approach these issues.

The groups met with staff, surveyed the college grounds and facilities, and contacted members of other schools for insights into their methods.

Key areas of focus included:

  • Lunchtime activities
  • The possibility of new spaces for students who wish to study during breaks either before, during or after school
  • Elective structure for Middle School
  • VCE subject selections at Year 10 level
  • Access, cleanliness and functionality of shared school spaces
  • Subject/ extracurricular excursions

Next year's SRC group is excited to hit the ground running and will be seeking feedback from the entire school community shortly.
