International Students

Intensive Homework Club Celebration

On Wednesday, 20 November, Assistant Principle Mrs McGee, the international program team, and all international intensive students joined our lovely volunteer Bill from Doncaster Holy Trinity Anglican Church, to celebrate the final day of the International Intensive Homework Club.

On behalf of DSC, Mrs McGee presented a token of appreciation to our caring volunteers who generously spent their time and energy helping our international students improve their English and familiarise themselves with Australian culture.

Each student from the Intensive Language Program gave a speech to reflect their gains from the Homework Club. They all showed their appreciation and willingness to help future students.

Student Reflections

Shin Thant (Berry) E , 8F, and Nguyen Quynh Thu (Jenny), 8F:

During our time at the homework club, we learned a lot of skills such as teamwork, leadership and communication. Also, the teachers have provided a lot of information to help our newly arrived international students learn about the homework club, so that it's not a stressful journey for them. However, it has been a pleasure to be part of the buddy program and assist everyone. We strongly encourage all of you to take this role for next year. Step out of your comfort zone and try new things for our school community!

Kiarash L, 8L:

Studying in Australia as well as Doncaster Secondary College is a new experience for me. Also, having a class like the Homework Club was very helpful and made me get to know the school quickly. Homework club sessions were useful too. If we had any questions or problems the international student's team (teachers) helped us. Also, we finished many worksheets with kind volunteers during the classes to improve our speaking skills. International students helped each other in different situations. I will help the future international students and contribute to the buddy program sessions too.

Tien Hieu (Harry) B, 10A:

Because I came here at the beginning of term 4, I only had one term to study in the Homework Club. However, it was a wonderful experience. I had the chance to make friends with many Chinese students which I haven’t done before, and to be honest, you guys are very good friends. Chinese students and the International Team have supported me a lot since I came to the school which is very different from my old school in Vietnam. I also improved my English a lot by studying with Australian local people like Mr Milford and Mr Ho. The time I spent in Homework Club was very useful because I think if I spend that time at home, it will be playing instead of focusing on studying. If we have new international students in the future, I am willing to help them because I know how hard it is to get used to school life in Australia.

Yifei (Jocelyn) G, 08L:

I feel very thankful to be in the Homework Club. If I do homework at home, I cannot focus on it. But in the Homework Club, teachers help me a lot and I can do it more easily.

Congratulations Award Recipient, Berry E, 8F

Congratulations to International Student Shin Thant (Berry) E, 8F, who received a several awards at the Middle School Presentation Night recently.

Here is Berry's reflection about her award:

Q: What awards did you receive at Middle School Presentation Night?

A: On Tuesday, 19 November 2019, the school held an award ceremony for middle school students. During the ceremony, I received a “Merit Award” for my year level, “Service Award-International” for student mentoring and “Academic Excellence” for EAL, Geography, History, Mandarin and PE/ Health.

Q: What is your reflection of getting these awards?

A: This ceremony was one of the most unforgettable moments of my time at DSC. When the year-level coordinators announced merit awards for other students, I thought that to receive such an award, students should be extremely hard-working, responsible and diligent for the school community. However, I was surprised to hear that I was one of the students to receive this award. I felt a little wave of excitement while the teacher made a speech about me and what I'd accomplished for the school community. However, after attending the ceremony, I found out that the school acknowledges and appreciates all students' achievements individually each year.

Q:Who assisted you during this award-winning journey?

A: I have too many people to mention if I had to name everyone who assisted me during this award-winning journey, but I would like to thank the international team for supporting from the beginning, my year-level coordinator for always being positive and encouraging, my subject teachers and my family members for everything they have done for me. Without all of these amazing people, I definitely would not have been able to receive these awards.

Year 12 Valedictory

Some Year 12 international students joined with their families and close friends to attend the Year 12 Valedictory Assembly at Doncaster Secondary College on Friday, 22 November.

International students Xinru (Olivia) Y (12I), Wenxuan (Wilson) C (12E) and Nihui (Krystal) C (12I) received subject awards and merit awards for their excellent academic achievements.

For these Year 12 international students, the ceremony was filled with mixed emotions: happiness, excitement, tears and laughter.

Congratulations on graduating and best wishes for your next adventure!
