A Day in Redwood Forest -

Student Reflection

The Year 9 MyOutdoors class recently had an excursion to Redwood Forest. Blake H (9B) shares his reflection on the day.

On Wednesday, 13 November, the Year 9 MyOutdoors class took a long trip up to the Redwood Forest, East Warburton.

When we arrived there was nothing around except trees. We walked one-by-one into the forest, and my first thoughts were that it was cool how all the trees where in rows and columns. It was really trippy looking in different directions and seeing all the trees form paths. We then walked down to a creek, took some photos and enjoyed the area.

We followed the river down to where it merged into the Yarra and we found a nice area that you could swim in, if the weather had been nicer. It had been a rainy week, so we learnt how flashing flooding occurs after rain, and how “snags” and hazards might be a danger to swimming in the recent conditions.

Once we had a look around the area, we headed back to the bus to come home.

We learned a lot about being safe in forests and creeks/rivers. We also learned about how to use the compass and relied on that to meet our teacher at the meeting time. I could definitely see myself going back to Redwood Forest to explore a bit further out.

Rock Climbing at Hard Rock, Nunawading

Reflection by Alivia N (9J) and Ethan D (9A)

For MyOutdoors this term, one of the highlights was our experience at Hard Rock.

Hard rock is a rock climbing centre in Nunawading where you work in partners to complete the different climbs.

We spent roughly two hours in groups of three, working together and building our teamwork skills on the different rocking climbing walls.

We worked at our own skill level whilst encouraging each other to go a little out of our comfort zones.

Everyone attempted to climb as high as they could and we ended the day with no injuries, and a successful 30 minute bus ride back to school safely.

The experience was overall beneficial for all of us as we got to develop new skills such as belaying and climbing, whilst having fun, bonding and gaining the trust of our class mates throughout the day.

We strongly recommend rock climbing at Hard Rock again to any further MyOutdoor classes.
