NAPLAN

This week our Year 3 & Year 5 students will be participating in NAPLAN.  NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year.  The NAPLAN tests begin this week on Wednesday 15th March  and conclude next week on Monday 20th march. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national standards and over time.  The NAPLAN assessments will also provide our school with information about student learning and the effectiveness of learning & teaching programs.

All NAPLAN tests are now completed online except for Year 3 Writing.  This ensures greater testing accuracy as the tests are adaptive, this means that if a child answers a question correctly they are presented with more challenging questions and if a child answers a question incorrectly they are provided with a less challenging question. Adaptive testing allows a wider range of student abilities to be assessed and measures student achievement more precisely.

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. Students sit assessments in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

The NAPLAN results are used by schools in several ways:

  • Teachers use results to help identify students who need greater challenges or extra support.
  • Schools use results to identify strengths and areas of need to improve teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
  • School systems use results to review the effectiveness of programs and support offered to schools.

If your child is in Year 3 or Year 5 there are several things that you can do to support your child over the next week, during the NAPLAN testing period:

  • Ensure they get a full night's rest
  • Provide a healthy and nutritious breakfast.
  • Encourage them to drink an adequate amount of water.
  • Prepare their school uniform and school bag the night before to support a smooth and relaxed morning routine.
  • Provide your child with words of support and encouragement.
