Celebration of

Learning

 Prep Road Safety Squad

Nicky from the RACV safety squad came to talk to the preps about being a safe passenger and a safe pedestrian.

Year 1 Ambulance Visit

On Wednesday 15th March, Amelia from Ambulance Victoria came to visit the Year One’s. The Year One’s have been learning about Community Helpers in their Inquiry Unit this term. Amelia talked to us about how Paramedics help us in the community and talked about the things they do to help people in different situations. The Year One’s were also very lucky to have a turn at sitting inside the Ambulance and looking at what it is like in the back of the Ambulance with all of the different equipment that the Paramedics use. Thank you so much to Amelia (Felicity’s mum from 1E) for taking the time to come out and talk to us about what you do as a Paramedic. All of the Year One’s learnt lots of things and had so much fun going inside the Ambulance.

Prep Number Games

Learning is such a positive experience but put it into a game …. It’s far more serious and requires a higher level of focus. Look at these amazing learners go!!! Whoever thought number recognition to 10 could be so much fun!

Prep CFA Somerville Excursion

A big thank you to the firefighters who attended the Somerville station for half a day to give our preps a wonderful experience! You are fabulous!

A big thanks also to the many mums and dads who helped us!

The Prep staff and students would like to say a massive thank you to the Somerville Fire Station for displaying such a fun, hands-on excursion for us. We got to have a turn in the fire truck, hold the hoses and even learnt how to stop, drop, and roll! Please discuss with your children a safe place to meet if there is a fire in your house (e.g., the letter box).

Prep Puppets

Confidence is everything as a learner.

The students have been using puppets on each hand to create a dialogue and use different voices each time one speaks. Tate transferred this practice to the real thing! He read a shared reader to the class and  nailed the character voices! Congratulations Tate, your audience loved it.

Prep A

Prep A won their first specialist award of the year for Performing Arts.

Taylor and Theo were very excited to receive the award on our behalf.

Grade 2 MAB Monsters!

As part of our numeracy lessons, we have been learning about place value in a variety of ways. One of these ways has been with MAB. We gave the students some MAB and they created their own MAB monsters. They then needed to calculate the number of hundreds, tens and ones that they used!

Sustainability @ Somerville

Week 6 was a huge week for sustainability at our school. We started off with our grade taking part in Clean Up Australia day. They walked to Barber reserve and spent some of their time making a positive impact in our local environment and ecosystems, it was really encouraging to see so many of our students so passionate about keeping our world litter free.

On Thursday the 9th of March we had a selection of our Environmental Education Crew attend the Young Environmental Leaders Summit in Main Ridge. Here they learned how to audit the current sustainability practices our school has in place as well as Identify areas for growth. Students took part in some activities to develop understanding of how to improve Biodiversity and reduce the energy consumption of the school as we work towards being carbon neutral. Finally they were guided through making their own action plan which we look forward to guiding our learning this year.

Some of the words students said about this day are.
