Learning Centre One

As we are fast approaching the end of the Term, it has been great seeing all the preps settle well into their first term of learning at OLSC. They’ve  shown hard work and determination as they’ve been exploring what they can do, as they learn and explore new things. They have  been using a positive mindset of being ‘resilient’ by giving everything a go within their learning, and always trying their best!

During phonics the preps have explored a new set of sounds and have begun learning about digraphs and how they’re two letters that make one sound. They have learned the sounds for L, LL, SS, B, F and FF and have been exposed to them through a range of activities such as:

  • Sound words
  • Letter formation
  • Letter identification
  • Decoding/blending words
  • Breaking words  into syllables

It has been an exciting couple of weeks of learning in literacy as the students have explored a range of books that exposes them to the concept of belonging and that everyone belongs. The students have also continued with their language experiences and their rotations. Next week the students will be partaking in a Farm incursion. In preparation the students have been reading texts about Farms and the different

animals that are on them.

The text that they’ve used have been:

  • Farmer Duck
  • Mrs Wishy Washy
  • The Farm Concert

In Maths the students have learned how to sequence and place numbers in order. They’ve been looking at sequencing and ordering numbers up to 20. Once they gathered a sound understanding of sequencing they looked at numbers that come before and after a specific number. The students have looked at various ways to gather data and have asked a range of  questions to gather data and to get a yes/no response.

Some of the questions the students asked were:

  • Do you like ice cream?
  • Do you have a pet?

The students then looked at the data that they gathered and investigated different ways to create graphs about their data and reflected on the data they gathered and what it might tell them.

During Religion, the preps have been looking at bible stories, in particular, Jesus and the children and how the children felt when Jesus’ called to them. The students then began exploring the Easter story and the significance of Palm Sunday and the Holy time at Easter. The Preps explored the stations of the cross in preparation for Easter and have immersed themselves in this learning.

We would like to wish you all a happy and Holy Easter. Take care and stay safe throughout this season of reflection.

SUMMER GALA SPORTS DAY

On Friday 24th March, all of the 5/6 students and their teachers travelled around the Wyndham area to compete against other schools in a variety of sports. In the lead-up to this day, the students trained each week to learn the skills required to participate. Our students chose to be in teams for tennis, basketball, cricket, volleyball and softball.

BASKETBALL TEAM

On the day, all of our students represented OLSC with pride and displayed great sportsmanship and respect for their teammates, umpires and opponents. We are extremely proud of the way they showed our school values and tried their very best.

NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY

Monday 27th March saw our Year 6 leaders catch the train into the city to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre to attend the 2023 National Young Leaders Day. The walk in the rain did nothing to dampen their spirits as they enthusiastically participated in the day. Throughout the day, DJ Raf and his friends encouraged the students to get up and move with fun dance challenges and games.

The first inspirational speaker was Candy Hertz, a media and sports presenter whose message was "It's OK to invent your own path" and "Develop your own strategy to help you overcome disappointments in life."  The next speaker was Amanda Johnstone who began as a young entrepreneur at 16 years of age and is now a tech designer recognised worldwide.  She spoke to the students about visualising their goals, always asking for help and that "Comparison is the thief of all joy."

During the breaks, students were able to meet some of the presenters and have their photos taken. They were very excited to meet Nazeem Hussain, a Melbourne comedian and author. He told the students to "Be true to yourself" and "Laughter is the best medicine." We were lucky enough to be able to buy a few copies ofhis new book, 'Hy-larious Hyena', for the school bookshelves. Finally, Robert 'Dipper' Dipierdomenico took the stage and entertained us with stories from on and off the football field. His message was "Success is nothing if you arrive at the finish line alone." Our students represented OLSC beautifully and had a brilliant day together.

Learning Centre Four

Reading

This week in Reading, the 3/4s read a text linked to our Inquiry topic of Staying Healthy. The students looked at technical language and identified precise nouns/ verbs in the story. They also created their very own glossaries!

Writing

In Writing, LC4 have continued to complete their ‘Bookies’ as part of their narrative writing unit. Students up-leveled their writing by checking spelling and punctuation, adding onomatopoeia, emotive language and dialogue using “talking marks”.

Maths

This week in Maths, students looked at different addition strategies, such as counting on, using number lines and friends of ten. Each class created a different set of posters to help them with their addition and subtraction.

Inquiry

This week, students have continued to create their own online project using Canva or Slidesgo for the Healthy Life unit.

Reconciliation

On Wednesday the 29th, LC4 had 42 students attend their Reconciliation. Fr Albert, Fr Huy and Fr Anton were with us to celebrate. The students completing their Reconciliation created family hearts and sheep which become a part of the beautiful displays up for the evening.

Harmony Day

To celebrate Harmony Day, every student in LC4 (and some staff) decorated their own person - sharing what is special and unique about themselves. All of these have been put up on the display board to show us that we are all different and unique, but that the earth is big enough for all kinds of people!
