Hands-on Languages Learning

Tactile activities are a powerful tool in the language learning classroom because they involve hands-on learning experiences, allowing students to physically interact with the material they are studying. This makes learning more engaging and enjoyable, which can boost student motivation and achievement. Indeed, studies have shown that tactile activities can help students to better retain information and develop key language skills, such as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.

In addition to improving language skills, tactile activities can also help to foster positive learning environment. They provide students with opportunities for collaboration and communication, which are important aspects of language learning.

At Aitken College, the Languages faculty have been endeavoring to make language learning a more tactile experience by creating activities for students to participate in during language sessions.

Students in 7C are pictured participating in a hands-on collaborative activity matching English and Indonesian vocabulary. Gamifying the activity by turning it into a race, makes it more fun and enjoyable.

Year 9 students are pictured playing an game called ‘one pen, one dice’. A translation activity that is fun and competitive and involves a translation text, one pen and one dice!

This week’s language challenge!

How did you go with last week’s challenge of learning the numbers one to ten in Indonesian and/or Spanish? This week, let’s take it twenty! Maybe you can test your child and learn together. Or, even better: ask your child to teach you. The best way to learn something is to teach it to someone else. To make it a more tactile experience, write the numbers as words on sticky notes, mix them up and then see if you can put them back in the correct sequence.
