Around Our School

City Life Excursion

On 7 and 21 May, the Semester 1 LEAD class visited City Life Café Frankston.  City Life is a non-profit organisation that helps the less fortunate, disadvantaged or people in tough times get through everyday life.  They do this by giving them food and facilities such as a shower, bathroom, clothing and a place to eat and socialise.

On both of the trips to City Life Café, the groups volunteered a day’s work to help out by preparing delicious food, putting together food packages and getting to know the friendly faces there.  It was an amazing experience that has changed the way we all see the less fortunate, that they are happy even when they have it bad because they know that there is somewhere for them to go.  We all had an amazing experience and we wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.

High Resolves

Introduction

On Monday, 5 May, Thursday, 8,May and Friday, 9 May, students from Year 8 participated in  the ‘High Resolves’ program.

High Resolves is a program that educates Australian students about the inequalities in today’s society, where students discuss the future, the environment, and how to be a Global Citizen.  It is an eye-opening experience for teenagers across the nation.  Students were placed into ten groups of ten, with two student leaders (from Year 9-12) in each group.  Students were with other students who they weren’t quite familiar with, so they made new friends and expressed their opinions to each other, with the positivity of constructive criticism without any put downs involved.

Activities included:

•         Introduction

•         Stands Up!

•         Airport

•         Global Village

•         Heritage

•         Create a Message

•         Closer.

Highlights

Throughout the day everyone was constantly amused by the array of inclusive activities. A highlight for many students was ‘Airport’.

Airport is a game where everyone is split into groups called ‘tribes’. These tribes are all suddenly trapped in an airport due to a suspected disease.  Whilst the airport is quarantined the tribes face numerous obstacles.  It soon turns into a game of trading and manipulation.  Soon the whole establishment falls into disarray as the

tribes turn against each other. It was an interesting experiment that displayed how quickly people will betray one another…

Survival of the Fittest.

Looking Ahead

The day was truly amazing!  Everyone had a laugh and a brilliant time.  We speak on behalf of every student and teacher there, that it was such a fantastic experience.  It showed how different, yet similar everybody on this earth is.  It also showed that everyone can live in harmony.

Schools Access Monash Update

Year 11 – Uniopoly

Monday, 5 May saw all Year 11 students participate in a one period session run by Monash University.

The aim of the session was to encourage students to think about the different challenges and choices they may face in the transition from secondary school to university.  The activities students undertook focused on informing students about their eligibility for scholarships, introducing them to concepts such as SEAS, surviving VCE and highlighting pathways available after school.  During the session students worked in teams to answer quiz questions, with the aim of successfully moving around an interactive game board.

It was a fantastic session and students walked away beginning to think about what lies ahead after secondary school.
