3 Generations of Frankston High School Students

On Wednesday, 21 May, I drove one of our fantastic Year 7 students, a young man by the name of Liam Wilkinson, down to Dromana to interview Mrs Elizabeth Weir.  Betty, as she prefers to be known, was a student at Frankston High School in its second year, 1925! She is an amazing woman who has just turned 100, but who still lives independently at home.

We conducted the interview as part of our work gathering material for the new school museum on the Senior Campus and to celebrate the up and coming 90thAnniversary of the school in October this year.

Liam did a wonderful job in interviewing this lovely lady and was a credit to the school. I’m sure he gained many valuable insights into life on the peninsula last century!

But there must be a lot of other ex-students who have tales to tell or memorabilia to share!  Please contact me at the school if you can help us build our collection of the school’s history.

Frankston & District Junior Football League Inc 2014

The Frankston & District Junior Football League is indeed a success story. The league started in 1965 with seven under 13 teams and today consists of 15 clubs and some 160 teams in 8 age groups, 14 divisions between U11 and U16, plus the ever-expanding U9’s and U10’s. The league has always been an innovator and many initiatives practiced in AFL junior ranks today emanated from Frankston and District.  A formal Girls Footy comp started just this week. After fifty years it is a good time to acknowledge the many people who have kept it flowing; respecting the league and club committee members, coaches, team managers, support staff and supporters who have helped to “keep the kids on the park”.

It is estimated some 100,000 players have started their playing days at the league and the exact original statement launching the League stated: “Promote Australian Rules Football, objectives based on building of boys’ character, team responsibilities, etc”.

And somewhat consistent with today’s slogan:  “Supporting the Community – Building Outstanding Citizens”.

Friday 8 August 2014

The league has booked the Frankston Arts Centre and the objective is to fill the place with 300 patrons.  Details are in the flyer attached.

Whilst the overall objective is about citizens, we are proud of our “production line” of outstanding VFL/AFL players and umpires; our objective is to honour each decade, not only the players, but the complementary people too.

We are seeking players and officials from the 20th

Century – Sixties – Seventies – Eighties – Nineties

AND the 21st Century, the 2000’s through 2014.

In 2000 we celebrated the Team of the Century (1965-2000) and in 2010 the Team of the Decade. Our many great players include:  Russell Greene, Robert Harvey, Nathan Burke and Stewart Loewe, all genuine 300 VFL/AFL gamers. Other outstanding F&DJFL Inc. boys include:  Brereton, The Lonies, Elphinstone, Peckett, Johnstone, Hulme, Massie, Hopgood, White, Mace, Lockwood, Loveridge, Moore, etc.

Our current crop include: Nathan Jones (Melbourne), Luke Parker (Swans), Mark Baguley (Essendon), Matty Shaw (Suns), Dylan Shiel and Nick Haynes (GWS), Jake Batchelor, Aaron Edwards and Brett O’Hanlon (Richmond), Tom Curran  and Dylan Roberton(Saints), Jarryd Grant (Western Bulldogs), Jordan Kelly (Hawthorn)  plus the recently retired David Hille (Essendon) and Jarrod Moore (Swans) to name a few. Rowan Sawers and John Russo have made outstanding contributions to VFL/AFL senior umpiring and administration.

This will be a real Aussie Rules Footy Celebration with many wonderful contributors; a “not to be missed” event – a great opportunity to make up a table of 10 peers and enjoy a great night

See the attached documents for details – GET in EARLY!
