RESPECT:  Congratulations to our newly appointed captains for our Middle Years cohort. Our Middle Year School Captains share with us what motivated them to be part of the student leadership team. Nash & Shinay below;

~ Captain, Nash Cox:

"I aspire to be on the College Student Leadership team because I think I have some great ideas that could benefit our school and make it a healthier environment.  I would like to make a positive, long-standing change in the school.

As a student representative, I would like to quite literally clean up the school when it comes to the amount of pollution we create.  If this is achieved, it's better for the world and helps Surf Coast have a better community.  Walking through rubbish on your way to class can and will ruin your mood.

What I love about being a student at SCSC is the freedom when it comes to presenting who you are, whether it's your makeup, hair or how you personally learn.  The school is very adaptable to who you are."

~ Captain, Shinay Grobler:

"I wanted to be a part of the college leadership team because I thought it would be a great opportunity to get to know my school and peers more.

I hope to make positive changes to the school and support my peers and the school staff.

I love the Unique curriculum opportunities like Food and Wood technologies and the amazing VET and VCE VM opportunities."

Introducing New Staff Member - Jennifer Eva

"I'm a Learning Support Worker with our Year 7's.

Before studying Education Support, I worked as a Complex Needs Support Worker for ten years.  I've studied Humanities at University and have a degree in Anthropology and Sociology.

I am looking forward to working in my local community, as well as becoming a part of the SCSC community.  I am excited about getting to know the students and supporting them to achieve their goals."

SCSC Outstanding Achievements

Each assembly will we recognise four outstanding students across the school to receive an award. These awards will be based on our school values.

Teachers have nominated students for outstanding behaviours that demonstrate one of our school values. Our SRC formed a panel to select the most worthy recipients for this term.

The following students have exemplified our SURF values so far in term 1 :

Oscar B – STRIVE
For demonstrating strong learning behaviours and a real commitment to learning by putting in extra effort.

Linni R – UNITE
Working collaboratively with her classmates to enhance her learning. Linni has started strongly in Year 7. Well done.

Arden B – RESPECT
Arden supports others in their learning, works hard and takes on feedback from teachers for improvement.

Isabelle H – FLOURISH
Isabelle has demonstrated fantastic learning behaviours and creativity in writing activities.

Crochet Club

FLOURISH: Our students have been relaxing whilst learning new skills in our new Crotchet Club on Tuesdays at lunchtime over in the Wellbeing area.  Thank you to all of those that kindly donated wool.  All students are welcome, if you'd like to give it a go!

Year 9 Health Elective

UNITE: The Year 9 Health Elective students learnt about the importance of collecting public health data and how this can lead to improved health outcomes, medical research and discovery.  They then created and distributed surveys across different year levels to collect SCSC specific data. Students will now analyse the data and make recommendations based on their findings.

Big thanks to the all the classes who participated in this research.

Year 10 - Outdoor & Environmental Studies

FLOURISH: The sun was shining on Friday for our Year 10 Outdoor and Environmental Studies Students who went surfing and exploring at our local beach.

An ongoing activity, during which students will develop their ability to work in teams and will participate in some collaborative learning.  Students can relate topics learnt in the classroom such as safe participation and risk management.

What a way to end the week!

Year 10 - Proud on The Pulse

STRIVE: Last week on the 14th February (St. Valentine's Day, no less), Izzy E. was interviewed by the Pulse Radio Station at Torquay  Community House (TCH) as part of her amazing contribution to the TCH Storytime program.

Last year Izzy worked with children ages 1 to 5 from the local community, reading stories and developing pre literacy skills.  Izzy has grown in confidence as part of this program, should be extremely proud of herself as we are and kudos to being brave enough to speak live on local radio!

Year 10 Relay for Life - Join in to support a great cause

UNITE: Four of our wonderful Year 10 students have been busily organising a Relay For Life locally in Torquay to be held March 17 and 18. This is the first of these events since 2019 and supports such a great cause.

Please support our students and this event by registering a team. We look forward to seeing many of our community there. Congratulations to Shinay, Riley, Lily and Nash for their efforts organising this terrific event.

Year 12 Orientation Camp

FLOURISH: On the 6th February, our Year 12 students went travelling and stayed in Melbourne for 2 nights.  It was a worthwhile camp and during their time, the students participated in activities related to team building, careers exploration, study skills and English text analysis. Or students engaged in a variety of activities, from university tours and study guidance seminars to  chilling out with some recreation time with ice skating and bowling.

Vocational Major - Adventure Park Fun

FLOURISH: On Friday the 3rd of February the VCAL/Voc Major cohort went to Adventure Park as part of their work-related skills and literacy units of work.

Students had a great day testing out the rides and slides while also completing a series of work-related tasks to be completed on the day and back at school.

Tasks included requiring students to communicate with each other and staff at the park as well as, fill out risk assessments and make suggestions to improve OH&S protocols at the park.

Whole School Swimming Carnival 2023

UNITE:  Our students had a perfect day for the Swimming Carnival this week.  The weather was just 'Goldilocks' being just perfect for a day in the sun.  Students participated in swimming events and those that did not swim did some fun activities and got into the school spirit by cheering their peers and house representatives along.

A big thank you to everyone for the smooth running of the Swimming Carnival.

Let's take a look and celebrate the students/House's below:

World Cup  - Alumnus, Kyra Cooney-Cross

Kyra is a former student and sister of Mali in Year 8 and has represented Australia in Junior and now Senior tournaments, which will include this years World Cup.

Although Kyra is a very humble person, she displays a heap of 'grit' on the field and has amazing inner strength, along with unbelievable skill.  An exciting talent for Australia and an outstanding role model for all.

She plays for Melbourne Victory and now in Sweden until the season begins here.

Kyra celebrated her 21st on Wednesday (Happy Birthday!)

We wish her every success along with her teammates in the World Cup

(You may notice one of her Australian guernseys adorns the Administration Office wall)
