Year 1 Team News

What have we done so far in Year 1? We’ll tell ya!

The year has started off so well for our amazing Year 1 students and teachers. We have enjoyed setting up our routines and each day the students enjoy sessions of Reading, Writing and Maths with our other subjects also being explored throughout the week.

This week in Reading the students have been learning about using our resources around us to help locate familiar language linked to our phonics focus.

In Term 1 the students are developing their understanding of Recount Writing and working on creating their own pieces. The focus has been on their own experiences and making sure we’re writing about something that has already happened. The students have also been practising their sentence structure with an emphasis on capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. The students have been really proud of their work and excited to share with their peers.

During Maths over these past few weeks, our learning experiences have been about place value and data. In place value the kids have been so excited to go out and use the new painted outdoor resources to enhance their understanding of the learning task. The students have immersed themselves into the games and activities by becoming a counter rather than using one! This week we have been exploring picture graphs and what data they present to us. We are engaging in creating questions to ask our peers about all different things that we can then graph.

Our Wellbeing and Inquiry has focussed on healthy habits, being aware of our emotions and following our school expectations.

We are all so proud of the way the students have begun this year and look forward to guiding them through and celebrating the many successes and failures they will experience throughout their 2023 learning journey.
