Mandarin Program Overview
Prep
In Term 1, Grade Prep students will be exposed to Chinese New Year, and the "Legend of Nian Monster". Students will be introduced to greeting words in Chinese, 你好(hello)/再见(goodbye) extension on the greeting words and follow with interactive activities such as worksheets, multimodal exposures, crafts and singing in the Mandarin class.
Grade 1
In Term 1, Grade 1 students will be exposed to Chinese New Year, and the "Legend of Nian Monster". Students will also be introduced to the traditions and customs of celebrating Chinese New Year such as children receiving 红包red pocket and eating dumplings. Students will be introduced to the four tones and introduce themselves in Chinese, such as 我叫..... my name is..... students will also participate in a variety of activities, worksheet, crafts and videos in order to master the language skills.
Grade 2
In Term 1, Grade 2 students will be revising numbers 1 to 10 and learn to sing the song "新年好” Happy Chinese New Year and the phrases "恭喜发财,红包拿来。” Which means wish you a year of wealth and prosperity and also reinforce the classroom language ”看一看“ look,”听一听“ listen, ”请坐下“Please sit down,”请站起来“ Please stand up,“手在头” Hands on head. We are going to use multiple exposures to classroom language in Chinese, students will be watching, speaking and reading a range of activities, craft works, singing and videos to learn "Chinese New Year" song.
Grade 3
In Term 1, Grade 3 students will be introduce to Chinese New Year Phrase "新年快乐“ and "恭喜发财,红包拿来” Which means wish you a year of wealth and prosperity and also reinforce the classroom language ”看一看“ look,”听一听“ listen, ”请坐下“Please sit down,”请站起来“ Please stand up,“手在头” Hands on head. Student will be introduced to the Year of Rabbit "tu nian". We are learning to use simple sentences to introduce about ourselves such as "wo jiao James, wo qi sui" I am James, I am eight years old. and follow with interactive activities such as worksheets, multimodal exposures, crafts and singing in Mandarin class.
Grade 4
In Term 1, Grade 4 students will be introduce to Chinese New Year Phrase "新年好“ and "恭喜发财,红包拿来” Which means wish you a year of wealth and prosperity and also reinforce the classroom language ”看一看“ look,”听一听“ listen, ”请坐下“Please sit down,”请站起来“ Please stand up,“手在头” Hands on head. We are learning the story of the Twelve Zodiac animals. We are going to use multiple exposures to classroom language in Chinese, students will be watching, speaking and reading in a range of relevant activities, craft works, singing and videos to learn to use simple sentence such as “wo shi she, wo di liu ming。” I am snake, I am the 6th place.
Grade 5
In Term 1, Grade 5 students will be introduce to Chinese New Year Phrase "新年好“ and "恭喜发财,红包拿来” Which means wish you a year of wealth and prosperity and also reinforce the classroom language ”看一看“ look,”听一听“ listen, ”请坐下“Please sit down,”请站起来“ Please stand up,“手在头” Hands on head. We are going to learn that Chinese is a pictographic language and explore the 36 Chinese characters and its strokes such as "mu 木“ means log, "yǔ 雨” means rain and more. We are going to use multiple exposures to classroom language in Chinese, students will be watching, speaking and reading a range of activities, craft works, singing and videos to learn 36 Chinese Characters.
Grade 6
In Term 1, Grade 6 students will be introduce to Chinese New Year Phrase "新年好“ and "恭喜发财,红包拿来” Which means wish you a year of wealth and prosperity and also reinforce the classroom language ”看一看“ look,”听一听“ listen, ”请坐下“Please sit down,”请站起来“ Please stand up,“手在头” Hands on head. Student will also learn to using simple sentence to introduce about their school, and their favourite subjects in school. “我的学校叫多贺提小学。” my school is Dohertys Creek P-9 College, “我喜欢的科目有英文,中文和数学。” The subjects I like are English, Chinese and Maths." Students will also interact and exchange information with other students to communicate about their school and their favourite subject/s at school.
Year 7
In Term 1, Year 7 students will consolidate the fundamentals in building their language skills. They will learn about the features of Chinese characters (the writing system), and Pinyin (the pronunciation system of Mandarin). They are learning to interact with the teacher and their classmates using the phrases that are frequently used in the classrooms. They will learn to build a virtual classroom and label the classroom items by using online translation tools. They will compare the schools in Australia and China, and learn how to learn efficiently. They will adopt various ways to take notes, such as diagrams, tables and charts.
Year 8
In Term 1, Year 8 students will explore Mandarin phrases and sentences in different contexts. They will discuss how tone marks are used to communicate in Mandarin and how some greeting phrases would be understood when used in different contexts. They will use a few conjunction words, such as “hé (and)”, and negatives, such as “bù (not)”, to make complex sentences. They will use these sentences to introduce different festivals around the world as well as a variety of festivals in China.
