Food, Langagenut Online Program and Italian Day
Italian Program
During Term 3 in Italian, our whole school topic was based around food ‘Il Cibo’ and incorporated a biological science perspective. The children in Prep and the Junior Learning Community learnt the names of different food items and where these foods are located on a healthy food pyramid. The children in the middle and senior years were introduced to the sense of taste (Il gusto) and the five different tastes we get from food i.e. dolce-sweet, amaro-bitter, salato-salty, acido-sour and umami. They looked at a picture of the tongue and the taste buds (Papille gustative) and which parts of the tongue allow us to experience tastes that are sweet, salty, sour and bitter.
New Language Support Program
Over the last few weeks the whole school has been introduced to a new computer program called Languagenut. This program will support our learning in the classroom and further challenge the children. It is a program that can be used both in the classroom and at home. It satisfies every individual learning style in a variety of engaging games and other activities. Languagenut is a great resource as it enables students to reinforce their vocabulary, whilst simultaneously practising the four key skills of foreign language learning, namely Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.
Italian Day
On 31st August, the whole school celebrated Italian Day. The children participated in various activities throughout the day including Tombola (Bingo), Calcio (Soccer), Bocce (Lawn Bowls) and Italian Trivia. The children enjoyed crostoli and cannoli for morning tea. Later the children partook in an incursion run by Woodstack Fire & Food who is a provider of premium incursion experiences based around cooking wood fired pizza. The incursion covered the science of cooking, nutrition and the Italian culture and language. The children made their own delicious pizza with the addition of their favourite toppings, from a freshly rolled ball of dough. They were able to enjoy their creation for lunch hot from the wood fired oven. The day finished with the children eating their gelati!
