ASPIRE Program at Siena College

During Science Week, the students in Years 3 and 4 went to Siena College to participate in the ASPIRE Program. It was a day dedicated to teaching children about science. The topic for the day was sustainability. Here are some reflections from some students.

On Thursday the 18th of August, the Year 3 and 4 students went to Siena College for an excursion.

We were taught about science and we got to take part in some experiments. We discovered that we have iron in our very own bodies and there is iron in the food we eat.

There was also a Tuck-Inn and the classrooms are filled with all sorts of cool work. They have a huge stage with a big curtain that you can take down and the whole school went there and actually got to perform in front of a big crowd.

We got to play outside but their play area was not as big as the one we have at St. Bridget’s. It was a very fun day and I am glad I got to be a part of it.

At Siena, the first thing we did was go to the science lab and we did some experiments. We were given carrots and mandarins and other things to test to see if they contained iron. Carrots and mandarins and other fruits and vegetables have iron in it.

After that, we had to make a zoo enclosure, made from recyclable materials. I made an elephant enclosure. We had to use flashing lights to warn the people about something such as whether the animal was being fed. I used the lights to indicate feeding time and bedtime for the animal.

Before we went home, we got bags with a highlighter and a badge and a certificate, then we went on the bus and went back to school. It was the best experience ever and it was so much fun.

On Thursday the 18th of August, we went to the ASPIRE Program at Siena College. The day before that was the school concert which was also at Siena College.

I loved the ASPIRE program because we learnt so many things about science such as electricity. There were so many fun things like discovering the iron in our body. We made animal enclosures that had lights on them.

At the end of the day, we got bags with gifts in them like highlighters and a certificate to show people we had attended the day. I hope I get to go again next year, but I would like to learn about a new topic. I really enjoy doing STEM.
