Over the last three months, 16 students from Grade 5/6 have been creating games for the Australian STEM Video Game Competition.

During the competition, the students had to create a game on Scratch that followed the theme of Networks. Each team consisted of four members and each member had a role on the team. The roles were Artist, Coder, Musician and Story Writer.

All students learnt new skills and created engaging games and design documents as part of the process. A requirement of the competition was that the each team had to fill out a Games Design Document (GDD) which documented how their game worked and how they created it. Each member worked extremely hard and when they experienced challenges with creating their game they used the learning power of Resilience to continue on the game.

We wish all the 16 students the best of luck when their games are judged.

Student Reflection from Ajur

Coding club began in Term 2, and since then it has helped me to collaborate with other students, to not be afraid of stepping out of my comfort zone and has helped me build my resilience. At first, I was worried about not being able to express my ideas with my group because my initial thoughts were different to what we ended up doing. This experience has helped me build resilience, confidence and has given my creativity skills a boost. I was able to share my ideas confidently and together with my group members, we were able to learn more about each other and make an amazing game. The coding competition has been an amazing experience for me and I’ve learnt a lot of valuable skills from working with new people.
