Teaching and Learning News

Learning is a life long process. It doesn't matter whether you are a child or an adult, learning can excite, challenge, delight and even save lives!

Last week the staff participated in two days of learning.

They revised their First Aid skills and practised CPR to ensure all are up to date and confident should an emergency happen involving any one in the SMDP community.

On Friday, we gathered again to re-imagine how we teach. It was exciting, future orientated, big picture thinking.

We spotlighted the Pedagogy of Inquiry.

We explored the reasons why the "how" we teach must be different to the past.

We agreed:

  • Information multiplies so rapidly
  • The knowledge relevant for the future has not yet been created
  • Information is readily available through a click on a search icon in ways inconceivable just two decades ago.

We built our knowledge of what inquiry is and what the best Inquiry teachers do and what that requires of us.

By the end of the day we had experienced many provocations that we could use to invite children to share their own questions and theories about big ideas and concepts. Here are some from our Prep students.

Student Learning

Over the past few weeks, students have been out and about learning through experiences including the Melbourne Museum (Prep, Year 1 & 2) visiting Emmanuel College (Year 4) visiting the State Library and Neighbourhood Earth Exhibition (Year 3 & 4) Skateboarding and dance and drama workshops (Year 5 & 6). Others participated in the District Athletics Carnival and all are looking forward to Book week celebrations on Friday.

Book Parade

Friday 26th August 2022 at 9am.

Our student leaders brainstormed this theme to mean:

  • you can be anything if you put your mind to it.
  • you need to see your full potential.
  • nothing is out of reach if you try your best.
  • life is full of endless possibilities
  • what/who inspires you.

We will be doing art activities during the week related to the shortlisted books.

There is no pressure to buy a costume for book week, costumes can range from masks, head wear or get creative with clothes you have at home.
