Literacy Instruction

Literacy Learning through InitiaLit  during online learning

A huge thank you to all Early Years staff who have been  determined to maintain the scope and sequence of the program through our Online Learning Platform and have developed and recorded these online lessons which have been  accessed through the GSuite.

In the context of the school setting, the effectiveness of the program relies on the face-to-face teaching and feedback from the teacher.  This is compromised when lessons are recorded and presented, so checking in and clarifying understanding with your child has become a feature of the learning program.  Parents have responded that the experience has  given them first hand insight into the learning intentions and success criteria and the literacy content covered, within each year level.

Feedback has also shown that the children have been captivated by their teacher presenting online and have watched and re-watched the videos many times giving multiple exposure and enabling students to consolidate their learning.  It has been extremely effective to personalise this learning to LNPS and maintain the continuity of learning through this COVID-19 time.

It is important to be remind you, that the recording of lessons is only allowed to be used with permission, within a closed school network, which is the GSuite at LNPS and under no circumstance may recordings be shared with others, due to copyright. This includes forwarding videos or links, taking screen shots of materials, sharing content on social media or any other behaviour that breaches both copyright of the program and compromises the identity and privacy of the teachers.  Thank you to all families for respecting  and complying with this request.

A reminder that other ways to support your child’s literacy learning include:

  • Having in depth discussions with your child about what they are learning
  • Finding a special space to read together:  on the swing, in an armchair, in bed so the experience is a pleasure not a chore
  • Engaging in many and varied types of reading experiences: recipes, newspapers, television information, instructions, brochures, junk mail, electronic communication, notes and shopping lists
  • Online through the West Torrens library you are able to access Libby eBooks and audiobooks
