Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

A great weekend of sport last weekend saw Marist dominate across rugby league, tennis and basketball against St Edmund’s College. It was great to see so many teams enjoy success as a reward for the hard work they are putting in at training. This was never more evident than in the 1st XIII rugby league team which enjoyed a fine victory on the back of effort and defence. The traditional saying is that attack is the best form of defence, well the boys turned that on its head and demonstrated that defence can be the best form of attack, with their defensive pressure building throughout the match. This weekend coming sees us playing against Villanova in what will be a hard-fought round for all teams.

A reminder that next week with the EKKA week will see modified training programs and no competition on Saturday 13th as we enjoy the mid-term break.

Rugby League - Mr Ryan Apps

Hello to all parents, coaches, players and supporters. It is wonderful to see that the Marist teams are training and playing great football on the field and coming together collectively as a strong Marist contingent with all the values we instil.

With Round 2 complete, we can look back at where we require improvement over certain aspects, whether it being, attack, defence, structure or working together as a team, and developing our Marist Rugby League program.

The teams from Year 5 to the 1st XIII are developing and improving weekly; with some teams already well on their way to cementing a strong start to the season. It is pleasing to see year groups supporting other year levels and bringing to our football a strong pride and supportive culture.

Our thanks to our first guest speaker, Queensland and Australian Legend Mr John Ribot. John spoke to our Marist Rugby League cohort about his time in the game as a player, administrator and interactions. His message was loud and clear – everything comes down to 'Effort' and ‘Being a Team Player’ and all of our boys are showcasing this at every opportunity, well done to them. A massive thank you to John for taking time out of his busy schedule to contribute to the MCA Rugby League Program.

This coming weekend sees MCA taking on a strong opposition in Villanova. As is the custom with AIC Rugby League, no game is an easy one and this week is no different. Parental support from all has been superb and very much appreciated by myself and our committed coaching staff. In particular, I would like to single out Brett Head, who, as a parent and coach, has contributed a great amount of time and energy assisting the development and progress MCA Rugby League.

Please do not hesitate to contact myself if you have any questions or require further information.

1st XIII v St Edmund's College by Tasman Barry - 1st XIII Vice-Captain

As the 1st XIII headed out to Shorncliffe for our Round 2 clash against Eddies, the boys were fired up after a disappointing loss last weekend. The middle forwards Jimmy Boland and Tom Weaver led through the middle to secure some early points from Rory Baker. After some continued dominance and hard running from our backs led by Patrick Tierney and Dan Witt, two more tries followed by both Jack Billing and Rory baker for his double until eddies snuck one in at the end of the first half. The second half saw Brady Collins score in the corner with some gruelling back and forth for most of the half. The win was secured with the try of the year as the ball went through many sets of hands to finish with Tom Young over the line with a score of 26-6.

There are two Divisions

1. Main draw opens (Years 7-12)

2. Division 1. (For Years 7-9) players who do not wish to play against the top players. So, boys get your partners and enter your team and don’t miss out on the fun and the right to call yourself this year’s doubles Champions.

Welcome

MCA Tennis would like to welcome our newest member of the coaching team. Mr Adam Townsend. Adam is a club professional coach with tennis Australia who comes to Marist from Melbourne where he has worked in many private schools. We are most fortunate to have Adam here helping with the program that we have in place to help progress tennis here at the school. Adam will be responsible for developing the Primary year students and Callum and I are thrilled to be working alongside Adam. I hope we can all make him feel welcome as he finds his feet here at the school.

A reminder to all students that there is no coaching of any type next week due to the holding of this event and the Ekka Holidays.

Round 2 Wrap-up v St Edmunds College

Year 5-6 - Ms Jen Little

Round 2 of the AIC Tennis Competition against Ambrose Treacy College proved to be an exciting adventure last Saturday. Both Year 5 teams continued their dominance over their opposition with a final score of 6 -2 to the 5A team and 7 – 1 to the 5B team. All the boys played well but notable performances were from Darcy White, Quinton Reibelt and Riley Peatey who managed to keep their opposition scoreless in their single events.

The Year 6 competitors had a more difficult battle on their hands with our 6A Team going down to a very skilled ATC Team 7 – 1. Special mention to Roy Power and Tim Watts who managed to overcome in what was an epic doubles battle, scoring the team’s single point. Our 6B Team proved victorious in a close campaign to take out the win at 5 games to 3. Special mention to Charlie Kelly who proved his resilience throughout in a nail-biting match that saw him win 7 – 5. Well done boys and thanks to all parents for your support.

Year 7-8 - Ms Katelin Earle

The Year 7s arrived nice and early for a chilly start at St Edmunds on Saturday morning! The Year 7s did not drop a set against SEC with a clean sweep of 8-0 for both teams respectively. There was great tennis on display from our emerging Year 7s with excellent pairing of Oscar and Evan, Sam and Indy. The 7Bs only dropped 2 games in all their singles matches. An outstanding effort! Great work Hamish, Tom, Jeremy and Carter! I would like to take this opportunity to complement the Year 7s on their outstanding sense of teamwork and school pride that was displayed on Saturday. Thank you to all parents and caregivers that made the trip to Ipswich.

The Year 8s also had a very convincing with against St Edmunds on Saturday. Although the 8As won 8-0, there was some hard-fought games and rallies across all the courts. It was great to see the teams transfer their training into their matches, especially in the singles. Across the As only 6 games were dropped out of the 8 sets played. This week's pairings saw complete domination against the home side. Congratulations to Jack, Will, Jackson and Fletcher. The 8Bs also had a great day on the courts winning 7 – 1 and winning 38 -9. An excellent team pairing of Toby and Hugh saw the team rise to success. Isaac and Noah played some excellent tennis in their singles match. The boys are to be congratulated for winning humbly and gracefully. Thank you once again to parents and caregivers for your support on the day.

Year 9 and 4th and  5th teams Ms Christine Baillie

The 9Bs had a clean sweep win with the 9As coming close to matching them, only dropping 1 set. Ben Cross didn't concede even 1 game against his opponents.

The 4ths played valiantly against a much stronger team while the 5ths managed to win 2 sets with the help of Ben Mead who stepped up as a last-minute fill-in.

All matches were played in great spirit and a credit to the Marist boys in the way they represented their selves in a very humble win.

Year 10 Mr Callum Rees

The Year 10 boys were ready for the battle this week and proved too consistent and skilful, with the 8A team winning 8-0 and only losing 9 games in 8 sets. Special mention to Henry, harry, Rory & Jake for winning all their singles matches and all the doubles matches. Teamwork is paying off boys and great to see you all playing for each other and supporting each other each week.

Well done boys. Our 10B team also with both teams having one player short winning 5-0 and totally outperforming their opposition. Fantastic wins to Oliver, Lucas and Oscar and lets keep it going boys with training this week.

Opens Teams 1st, 2nd, 3rd IV teams - Mr Andrew Ward and  Mr Ben Webb

Both of our teams cruised to easy victories over their opponents only dropping one match in both teams. Our 3rd team deserve a Special mention with Will Moon and Andrew Milner keeping their opponents scoreless in their singles matches. Also, our boys kept a perfect score card in the four doubles matches so was very pleasing to see the hard work the boys have been putting in on the practice court. Keep working hard boys.

Our 2nd team of Frank, Jack, Ruben and Nelson won every match and took a clean sweep. Congratulations boy and well done.

1st IV Mr Andrew Ward, Mr Callum Rees and Mr Ben Webb

We could see from the get-go that this was going to be a match that we would have to grind out if we wanted to win. After our first two doubles matches, we were locked at 1-1 with a great win by Louis and Blake and a very close loss to Liam and Lachlan. Our first two singles were played with a great win to Liam Webb 6-0 6-1 as he is getting better each week in grinding out a win for the team. Unfortunately, Blake not really getting going in his match and going down to his opponent in an entertaining match.

This locked us up at 2-2 all and it was now down to the young guns to apply their talents. After a very hard-fought battle, Louis Morris won 6-4 6-3 against a very determined opponent and after a marathon match, Lachlan won in a super tiebreaker after being locked at 1-1 set all in their match. I must commend the way our boys handled themselves during the matches played, as we did come across some disruptive times from outside the playing area. Leading 4-2 in matches it was down to the doubles to win the tie for us. The boys did not disappoint with both teams winning the reverse doubles 6-1 and 6-1 to finish off a tired and upset-looking team that in the important periods of the matches did not handle the pressure. I would like to commend all our boys on learning to deal with the pressure and reflect it back to their opponents. This has been evident for 3 weeks and I believe is a very huge part of why the team has now won 3 games in a row. (first time in a long, long time) Knowing all the boys who are wanting a 1st shirt and pushing for a start in the team, keep going as it is driving all the boys to continue to improve each week. It is healthy for us as a team and as a school, to keep pushing to improve our AIC program. It is pleasing to me as the head coach, to see all the hard work starting to pay off. I could not be any prouder of how the boys are playing as a team and not as individuals playing in a team. The boys are seeing this now and I can see a whole different attitude to training sessions and the way the boys think about their own tennis, and how they play apply it in a match through match tactics and how to recognise weaknesses to exploit and use in their own match plans.

A reminder that there is no match on the 13th of August due to Ekka Holidays. Round 4 match will be on the 20th of August v Padua College.

MCA Basketball – 1st V vs St Laurence’s College

Coach’s Report

Saturday was a really tough beat for the 1st V against St Edmund’s. After an ordinary showing against Laurie’s the week before the team were keen on playing well and making some shots. The game was a tight affair from the tip-off until the final siren where we saw ourselves lose a close one by 3 points after overtime. A big thank you to all the boys who came to support the team, their effort on the sideline really helped built the atmosphere in the gym. There were heaps of positives to take away from the game, the full-court pressure, ball movement and outside shooting was much improved. Brent Humphreys was outstanding with a career-high 33 points and was well supported by Paul Strachotta with 12. Once again everyone who stepped onto the court contributed in one way or another and it was disappointing to play so well and not walk away with the win. It will be a big week on the training court getting ready for the matchup against the powerhouse Villanova at their place.

Captain’s Report

Round 2 saw the 1st V Marist Basketball boys host a competitive St Edmunds team at home. Coming off the loss, Marist was prepared to put up a fight until the end and both teams came out strong with intensity and supporters alike, with war cries back and forth all game. Eddies got on the board early, but the boys retaliated quickly, hinting at the nail-biting game that was to come. The Marist boys showed the depth of the squad, with all players making an impact and keeping the game a close one. With the lead changing constantly, both teams knew it was going to come to the final minutes, with scores tied and 5 seconds on the clock, Eddies missed an opportunity and overtime was forced. Marist saw multiple starters fouled out with minutes to go, with others stepping up beyond expectations in crucial times. Sadly, an out-of-bounds call discounted the potential game-winning corner three-point shot by Declan Tunny, to leave the score at 69-72 in favour of Eddies

Internal Basketball Competition

With the popularity of basketball at MCA there have been an unprecedented number of boys who have missed the opportunity to play Term 3 AIC basketball. There were over 150 boys from Year 7 to Year 9 who missed out on selection.

The College would like to reintroduce an Internal Basketball Competition for those boys who have missed out, for boys in Years 7-9. The competition would be played in a gala day format over 3 weekends with teams playing 3-4 games each day. It is proposed to run this competition on 27 August, 3 September and 10 September. Games would be played 11:00am – 1:00pm, at Marist College.

At this stage, we are seeking an expression of interest from interested Year 7-9 students. It is envisaged that boys will be able to enter as a team or an individual, and be placed into a team.

Marist Basketball Year 7-9 Internal Competition Expression of Interest

It is hoped that following a successful competition that the format could be increased next year.

Match Reports

Hockey - Ms Kathryn Badini

In a Grand-Final rematch from last year, our Hockey team played St Edmund’s College at the State Hockey Centre. Once again, the final result was not reflective of the efforts being put in on the field by our boys – with Marist going down 7:4. After an early goal from Eddie’s off a short corner, Seb Karamihas managed to tap in a great team goal. Nick Keir got another in the last minute of the first half to round score to 3:2 in Eddie’s favour. Despite some great saves from our goalkeeper Spencer Sharman and our defensive trio of Fletcher Cabot, Cooper Lunn, and Harry Lunn, the Eddie’s boys got the luck when it came to connecting their set-ups. Once again, however, we were the last to score – Nick Keir securing himself a hat trick – and we received a short corner right on the whistle. Hopefully, the hustle that we are building in these two games will pay off when we come to play Padua and Kelvin Grove State High School in the coming weeks.

Track and Field - Mr Derek Lennon

The Marist Track and Field season is well and truly underway with our first mini meet last Friday setting a high-quality benchmark for the program to work from. Well done to those boys who took the opportunity to record a result and get some race practice in. We will have another meet this week and keep an eye on the College App for upcoming events. Boys wanting to be considered for Met North will need to make sure they have recorded a result in the mini-meet or at training.

AIC Championships - 10 weeks to go.
