Maths News

By Amanda Miller

As part of the ‘Student Excellence Program’, some of our year 5 and year 6 students participated in a math extension workshop facilitated by ‘World of Maths’. They were joined by Caulfield South Primary School and Malvern Primary School too. You can learn more about the experience by reading the reviews shared by the students who participated.

I really enjoyed the Maths workshop. It was fun, interactive and the way that the teachers taught us helped me learn lots more new things. They also taught us about how maths is used in daily life and that just made me appreciate it even more.

In the incursion, we did a lot of fun, interactive math activities. The involved visualizing problems and actually doing them. My highlights of the session was when my group did Mouse in the House. Mouse in the House was a chance game where you put counters in tube which led to different paths. We had to guess which one would be more likely to drop into. It was really fun and I wish I could do it again.

In our Maths incursion we did lots of different logic puzzles which made us think outside the box and which got us collaborating with people in our group. My friends and I had lots of trouble with one of the activities that consisted of chains. We ended up spending roughly 10 minutes trying to figure out a solution, but in the end we came up with it. That made it even more amazing and fun to work out because we were having different ideas thrown at us. I definitely had much more fun than expected and I would LOVE to try something like this again.

Dhruvi Year 6

On 14th July we had a math incursion run by “World of Maths”. There were lots of activities and logic puzzles to do (math related). The instructor taught us how to solve 11 times anything that's under a hundred! I was in a group with Anu, Dhruvi and Prisha. The first activity we did was “Fire escape” where a family was stuck on top of a roof and we had to get them down. I particularly liked “Escape” where we have 2 chains and you have to loop them with another chain and there are “bracelets” at the end of each chain. The problem is to unloop your chains without taking off the bracelets. Dhruvi and I struggled for more than 10 minutes until the instructor taught us how to unloop it. Kids from the neighbouring schools came as well. The incursion was for VHAP and Math Olympiads only. Overall it was a wonderful time and I highly recommend for other people to try it out.

During the Math World incursion we had the opportunity to work through a lot of hands-on activities/ puzzles. Two people from Math World came and set up 8+ activities that we were able to choose to do. We were in groups of 3 or 4 and 2 other schools also came to enjoy the incursion. Some of my favourite activities were ‘Which Way Home'. We used magnets to guide a metal marble down the box adding up all the numbers to get the total. My other favourite activity was 'Escape' as we got chained together and tried to get un-tangled. Jasper and Neil got into many different tangled states then the instructor came over and showed that it was actually really simple.

Gabe Year 6

I really enjoyed this incursion because it was fun yet challenging. I would 100% recommend this program to other schools as this is a way the students can learn how to problem solve in many different ways. It was an amazing experience!

Jasper Year 6

On Thursday 14th of July, the WORLD OF MATHS workshop came to C.P.S. to work with children who participated in Math Olympiad or VHAP. The workshop offered 17 different problem-solving tasks applied to everyday life situations. We had 2 hours to work with our friends on whatever tasks we wanted to do, the whole math workshop was very engaging and we all had fun learning about math.

Nathan Year 6

On Thursday the 14th other students and I in year 5 & 6 got to be part of a math workshop. I really enjoyed going around the math object problems. My favourite activities were when my group had to use blocks to work out how much each person had. I also enjoyed when we had to use a certain amount of blocks of string to connect two people.

Kate Year 6

I had a lot of fun learning about maths in the World of Maths. I liked answering fun math problems and learning interesting things. A few of the problems were really tricky to solve and another one different people had different answers. I found it very interesting.
