Getting a Good Start

In this week’s WA newspapers, it was reported that more than a quarter, 26%, of Australian Year Four students do not like learning mathematics.  As a mathematics teacher I am always planning lessons which are engaging, innovative and relevant.  A key factor in this research highlighted the importance of the early years and foundation skills including recognising numbers and doing simple addition and subtraction.  Promoting and learning fundamental numeracy and literacy skills cannot be underestimated in the early years of education.

Kindness and Compassion

At this week’s assembly, we focused on Kindness and Compassion.  Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.  Often, we talk about kind acts.  Students recalled the smile in the corridor, checking in on a friend and gentle, positive posts all contribute to people being treated with kindness.  One other aspect that was highlighted at the assembly was the giver of kindness was often rewarded just a much as the receiver.  Another strong theme that arose from our focus, was that the purest form of kindness has no audience and offers no credit or reward.
