Book Review July 2021: A focus on biographies – strong women and career paths

Emotional Female by Yumiko Kadota

Yumiko Kadota’s book ‘Emotional Female’ tells of her experience going through Medical School and training as a surgeon in Australia. The book tackles themes of burnout, ambitions and expectations, cultural identity as well as being a woman in a male-dominated career path – becoming a surgeon.

Yumiko, a talented and hard-working young surgeon tells of her experience going through surgical training with warmth and honesty. She discusses issues of mental wellbeing and burnout. This book is an interesting read for anyone coming to terms with what they really want in life especially in competitive career paths, the book discusses finding the strength to stand up for yourself in the most difficult of work situations and recovering from burnout and toxic work culture.

Although confronting, Yumiko writes with sensitivity and it is ultimately about remembering to look after yourself even when chasing big, long-standing dreams.

Take care all of you as we work through this week from home!

Kind Regards

Ms Veldsman
