Artist Spotlight

This week's Artist Spotlight is on the beautiful work of Ruby W (5/6A) with her very cool Frida Kahlo.  Ruby worked on brush controld to create this line portrait.  Isn't it wonderful.

Literacy News

In Foundation and the Junior School we use reading strategies from the Fountas and Pinnell Literacy Continuum during the Literacy Block. One of the activities that the students participate in is - Word Work.

Word Work is an opportunity for students to –

  • Focus on spelling and vocabulary work
  • Experiment with spelling patterns
  • Memorise high frequency words
  • Build vocabulary

This essential practice time supports children’s writing, fluency and reading.

Mathematics at St Brigid's

Most of us will remember our Mathematics lessons at school. They were lessons that we either loved or were scared off. All students were taught at the same level, the same concepts and the same way. You either understood Maths or you didn’t.  Aren’t we lucky that times have changed for our children.  Mathematics is taught with a much more hands on approach, through engaging and fun activities.

Prior to the teaching of any Mathematical concept all St Brigid students will complete a pre-test. The aim of this test is to find out which key ideas your child already understands and has mastered and what they need to work on.  Learning experiences are then devised to teach or consolidate the next key idea in your child’s learning.

These learning experiences are often differentiated, which means the same activity is used but the numbers or strategies the students are exposed to would differ according to the needs of the students.

GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! Link to YouTube Instructions for the game Get Out of My House!

This is an example of a game that we may play in the classrooms to consolidate different mental strategies used in addition and subtraction. There would be prompting questions that we would discuss with the students before and during games.

  • How did you choose between adding or subtracting the numbers?
  • How did you add those numbers? Did you use your doubles? Did you bridge to 10 first (7+5 = 7 (3+2) as 7+3 = 10 then 10 + 2 = 12)? Did you count on (hold the larger number in your head and add on the smaller)?
  • How did you subtract those numbers? Did you subtract to 10 first?

This game can also be modified by asking the students to take 3 cards instead of 2, or by changing the numbers on the grid and asking the students to multiply the numbers on the cards they draw.

Enjoy exploring numbers with your child.

5/6H Assembly - Friday 7 May

We hope you take the time to enjoy last week's Assembly.  Sadly we are still under COVID 19 density rules which do not allow for parents and friends to attend our Assemblies held in Brigid Hall at this stage.  As soon as the density rules for schools change we will certainly let you know and welcome you back to Assemblies at school.
