Triple M: Mental Maths Moment

Welcome back to Triple M: the Mental Maths Moment!

You have entered an exciting new area, specifically for our budding mathematicians! Each fortnight there will be an engaging mental Maths problem that you can discuss and work out with your family members. The first student to email me the correct answer will earn a point into the end of term prize draw.

Thank you to all the students who emailed last week. It was fantastic to see so many of you explaining how you got the answer! I love that many students are giving both questions a go! I also love to see some familiar names having a go every week!

Answers to Week 6's Questions:

Junior

  • There would be 400 handshakes

Senior

  • A cup of cappuccino costs $9 and a cup of filter coffee costs $6.

 Congratulations to…

  • Harry Padula from 8A who was the first one to email the correct answer for the Junior Question.
  • Leo St John from 11A who was our first Senior student to respond!

This Week's Challenge:

Junior question (Year 7 to 9)

Each candidate running for the seat of Parkville at the upcoming 18 May Federal election either likes to eat lamingtons or raw onions, but not both. The average age of the group of candidates who like lamingtons is 30 and the average age of the group of candidates who like raw onions is 50. If electoral hopeful Sir Les Patterson were to change his preference from raw onions to lamingtons, the average age of both groups would go up by 1 year. How many candidates are running for the seat of Parkville?

Senior Question (Year 10-12)

Take any prime number greater than 3. Square it, then add 14. Divide your answer by 12.

What is the answer? (Show your working out!)

Think you've got the answer? Email your answer (& your full name and grade) through to SNA@Bairnsdalesc.vic.edu.au with the subject heading 'Triple M - Jnr / Snr Maths Answer'
