Music News

It is hard to believe how much has been achieved, in Instrumental Music, over the past four weeks.

We welcomed back live performances, starting off with our much- missed Jazz Night, which was a sold-out event, held for the first time at York on Lilydale. It was a very successful evening that led to an even more successful All State Jazz Festival, held at St Leonard’s College the following weekend which involved all our stage bands, Senior Choir and Senior Vocal Ensemble.

Congratulations to every ensemble who represented Ringwood Secondary College at the Victorian All State Jazz Competitions over the weekend. All were fine ambassadors for the school.

A special congratulations to the following bands:

Senior Stage Band gained 2nd place in the Premier Division, only government school to gain a place. Nick Zhang (Alto Sax) and Ben Noble Saroto (Trombone) were selected for the Victorian Premier Division All Stars Big Band. Ben also received the Outstanding Soloist Award as well as gaining a place in the National All Star Stage Band. The same competition ran in South Australia over the weekend. Both events were replacement for Generations in Jazz National Stage Band Championships which usually occurs at this time each year.

Intermediate Stage Band also gained 2nd place, by 4 points, in Division B, and were one of the few Intermediate Bands amongst senior bands in their division.

They also received the Best Rhythm Section Award for the division. Max Taylor (Alto Sax) received the Outstanding Soloist Award for the whole division. Isaac Kirshner (Trumpet), Will Vandermeer (Guitar), Lachlan Bosomworth (Double Bass) and Joseph Shobbrook (Aux. Percussion) all gained positions in the Div B All Star Stage Band.

Junior Stage Band received the Best Trumpet Section Award for Division C. Tashi Merx (Trumpet) received the Outstanding Soloist Award and Isobel Ritter (Trombone) gained a place in the Division C All-Star Big Band.

Well done all!

These wonderful ensembles will be performing at our upcoming Intermediate and Senior Almost Winter Concert on May 27 and Junior Winter Concert on June 16, both 7.30pm in the College Hall. Please note, the Senior Concert has already sold out. This is the first time ever in the history of senior concerts here at Ringwood!  Tickets available for the Junior Concert on the following Try booking link from Monday 24 May:  https://www.trybooking.com/BRGHU

The Senior Strings and Symphony Orchestra are performing at the Victorian Schools Music Festival for Strings on Thursday 3 June. They have the great pleasure of performing in a state of the art, and recently completed theatre at St Leonards College which rivals the Recital Centre in Southbank. We wish them all the best for their performances.

Chocolate Drive – just a reminder that the cut- off date for Option 1 is next Tuesday 25 May.

If you haven't completed Option 1 by this date, chocolates will be distributed to the eldest music student in your family. Room and date for collection of chocolates to be confirmed via another event published on COMPASS after next week. Funds raised through the Chocolate Drive greatly contribute to purchasing those larger, and sometimes rare, instruments that are too expensive for families to afford such as bassoons, baritone saxophones, tubas, percussion equipment and so forth.

Don’t miss our Music Association Raffle of a Hot Air Balloon Ride, valued at $980, generously donated by QIC Eastland. Tickets are available at all upcoming Music Events and the General Office. $5 per ticket. Raffle will be drawn at our Gala Concert at the end of term 3.

The Music Association is also selling Entertainment Books and there is currently a $50 discount. Please check the following link for more details of this offer:

Thanks again to everyone for all their effort in bringing back live music to the school and beyond.
