hey WARRIOR: Book review

Book review:          hey Warrior by Karen Young

It's a sad fact that many children and adults these days suffer from anxiety that affects their daily lives. I came across this very helpful book a couple of weeks ago and I highly recommend it if you are looking for something to help you discuss anxiety with your child.

hey Warrior acknowledges that anxiety can happen to anyone. The book explains that anxiety happens because part of our brain, the amygdala, thinks it needs to protect us. Our amygdala is referred to as our fierce warrior that is there to protect us, but that sometimes it protects us when there is nothing to protect us from! When you feel anxious your amygdala is working very hard and can take over situations, making us think there is something to be fearful of.

The book explains beautifully what happens to our body when we are feeling anxious and why this happens, we breath quickly, can get dizzy, our heart goes faster and we feel butterflies.

The author, Karen, gives children strategies of how they can tell their amygdala to relax and how they can be the 'boss of their brain'.  The book teaches children about the benefit of strong breaths and powerful thoughts!

hey Warrior will help you explain anxiety to your child, give them an understanding of what is happening to their body when they experience anxiety, and with this understanding, ways that they can have control over their own anxiety and what is happening with their body and thoughts.
