Learning Hub and Wellbeing Update

'The Hub has become a real asset in our school, highly valued by staff and students alike.'

Child Safety at Fatima

Recently we have explicitly reminded all students of their right to safety. It is always a part of Social Emotional learning (SEL) at Fatima and it is also part of being a positive education school.  As a child safe school and parish we have introduced some new posters into learning spaces and around our school to remind everyone of their right to safety and that they have adults who care and listen. Midway through our review, it is clear that this is a priority in all MACS schools. We want all children and young people to feel safe and be safe and we want them to grow up knowing that they have a voice.

Hub News

What a fantastic Term it has been in the Hub so far. We have been very busy with a range of activities going on and our space constantly changing to meet the needs of our students.

The Hub has welcomed an influx of students accessing the space to do independent work, group tasks, small group and one-on-one intervention work, hub breaks and just this week has been an alternative space for students participating in NAPLAN. It has been wonderful to see the students using the alternative furniture to help them be the best learners they can be.

M Power

This week has also seen the commencement of our Year 5 girls beginning their MPower journey. MPower is a program that has been developed by Stride for girls in Years 5-9. Stride provides wellbeing programs for young people and their communities across Australia.

The MPower Girls program explores how girls relate to one another, including the issues of bullying and cliques. The purpose of the program is to reveal and explore the vast and unified nature of girls, to better understand girls’ relationships, to practice new ways of relating and to develop the confidence to express feelings honestly without aggression.

Three ‘M’ aspects are emphasised:

  1. Me and my friends (Give friendship to gain friendship)
  2. Mean what I say (Be real - say how you feel)
  3. Make up my own mind (Be assertive and stand up for what’s right).

This week, in our first session,  the girls were introduced to “Power Girl” - the ideal friendly and assertive girl who enjoys being a friend and making friends. She says how she feels respectfully and will stand up for what’s right. We discussed words to describe Power Girl such as brave, different, strong, honest and kind. Then the girls began their visions of what their Power Girl looks like and what she represents. These will be completed and shared in our next session.

Over the coming weeks we will celebrate how amazing it is to be a young, female leader and friend that can use their voice to make positive changes in our school and wider community.
