RSC Work Futures EXPO 2019 (9)

In article Number 8 I mentioned the 7 job clusters in the Australian economy which are based on skills demanded by employers.  Jobs within these clusters range from 10 occupations in THE TECHNOLOGISTS cluster to more than 140 occupations in THE INFORMERS cluster.  The Technologists cluster is new and uses computer-based equipment where scientists are developing machinery to improve future industry outcomes.

THE INFORMERS has many occupations because it covers jobs that protect the community, provides information, education and training to the people of Australia.  Jobs such as school teachers, economists, accountants, police and defence forces are in this cluster.  Industries closely linked include Professional, Scientific and Technical services and Education and Training.

THE GENERATORS cluster is closely linked to industries that include Tourism, Retail Trade, Accommodation, Arts and Recreational Services.  These people require high levels of interpersonal interaction in retail, sales, hospitality and entertainment.

THE ARTISANS are ‘hands on’ people, working in Construction, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Utilities and Logistics industries.  They include machine operators, electricians, landscape gardeners, livestock farm workers, plumbers and carpenters.  Closely linked with this job cluster are Construction, Mining, Agriculture, Utilities and Logistics industries.

THE CARERS are those who are in the mental and physical health, or well-being of others.  People in this group include GPs and surgeons, social and childcare workers, nurses and counsellors.  Health Care and Social Assistance are included in this cluster.

THE COORDINATORS is wide ranging, from bookkeepers and printers, fast food cooks, bus drivers, law clerks, furniture removalists, to receptionists and car park attendants.  These are jobs in Administrative Services and Logistics.  These are ‘behind-the-scenes’ workers.

THE DESIGNERS are people with science, mathematics and design skills who become architects, electrical engineers, food technologists, building inspectors, geologists and draftspersons.  These are in Architectural, Engineering and Technical Services industries.

This information is summarised from a (fya) research document, entitled The New Work Mindset, published in 2016.  It gives an understanding of job clusters and how future jobs will be classified.  This should be of interest to all parents and senior students in Years 9 to 12 who will are now thinking of finding jobs.

This expo is a free event organised by Ringwood Secondary College and the Heritage and Alumni Group.
