From the Archives
Sacré Cœur is lucky to have a great collection of early photos in its Archives. Here's a wonderful photo showing some very earnest girls absorbed in "useful" activities. This is the room at the bottom of the Brown Stairs with the fresco “Stilling the tempest” painted by Mother Mary Philippine Zahel RSCJ who was at Burke Rd between 1908 and 1912. Over the years the room has housed the school library, Community Development staff and is now the Principal’s office.
These students from 1924 are enjoying a game of Cache which was a French version of Hide and Seek. It was played on Feast days and was enormously popular with both nuns and students. The nuns took the game very seriously and were known to abandon their normally decorous behaviour to run with habits hitched up and veils flying.
