Assistant Principal's Report

This coming Monday will see the launch of the Warrnambool College Waste Audit. Our environmental leaders have been inspired by the program War on Waste and are looking to apply some of these concepts and ideas to our own waste practices. This audit was initially scheduled for the end of 2018 but due to inclement weather we had to post-pone. We are hoping that the weather God’s will be kind to us on Monday.

Essentially, as a school we want to get a handle on how much waste we are actually creating. We are going to obtain a visual, whole school event to highlight the amount of waste we produce. The aim of this is to inspire learning and change. Particularly, we want the audit to inspire better recycling, reduction, contamination and educate the community about the importance of waste – and the importance of streaming.

A group of 32 students will be directly involved in the sort. Students from 8H that are completing this as part of their environmental studies research project and students that have self-elected to be part of our environmental team moving forward. Things we are in need of are wheelbarrows, rakes and tongs. If any parents would like to come along and assist in any way we would love to see you there. The sort will be commencing at 10:30am on the top tennis courts and we will be holding a school assembly during period 4 to reveal our findings. Students and staff will be invited to view the sort during break time and prior to the assembly.

In relation to school uniform it has been disappointing to see a variety of options being worn to school that are not part of our uniform policy. In particular, the wearing of Skins and alternate jumpers. We ask families to please support us by encouraging your child to wear correct uniform. There are numerous options available to students and many combinations. Essentially, students can wear school uniform in any combination they like as long as it is Warrnambool College logo clothing. If students or parents are wishing to make changes to the uniform then we invite you to be part of the Engagement and Wellbeing committee run at the school.

This week we held Academy sign up for interested students. Each of the Academy groups ran a ‘pop up’ style sign up in the hall. There were many interested students and the call for some new academies to be started. Academies run based on student interest for a particular year. We are always keen to hear from students if they think there is something we are missing. Academies that are currently on offer consist of: music, musical, rock band, chess, drawing, cooking, football, basketball, netball, tennis, hockey, soccer, swimming, surfing, table tennis, golf, and cricket. If your child missed the sign up and would like to get involved we invite them to pass their name on through the main office or speak with the co-ordinating staff member directly.
