Welcome everyone

Term Four in the 3-6 Learning Community has been our best yet. It has been such a relief to have uninterrupted learning time for the duration of the term. Students have been challenged to imagine magical worlds through reading and writing, conduct experiments in chemical science and develop their knowledge and skills in fractions, decimals and percentages.

Chemical Sciences

Student engagement in chemical sciences this term has been a highlight. Many experiments have been conducted to investigate the impact of temperature on states of matter. We’ve had students making butter to investigate the impact of temperature on change. Students were amazed to watch cream turn from a liquid into a solid after much shaking.

"We made butter using chilled cream and room temperature cream. We put the cream inside some jars. We had to shake them until changes started to happen. We noticed that the room temperature cream changed first. First it was a liquid and then it turned into a solid"

Maddie, Year 4

Other students were presented with the challenge to stop a change in state. Students were given a frozen icy pole each and had to develop methods to keep the solid from changing into a liquid (without using a freezer). This was a tricky task on a hot November day!

Reading

We have had our heads in imaginary worlds all term! Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, George’s Marvellous Medicine and The Magic Finger are just some titles students have been reading. During reading lessons, students have been developing their skills in identifying themes, messages and character development. We learned that characters and stories teach us important lessons about friendship, perseverance, hope and good and evil.

Some students have participated in book clubs. These students were given the opportunity to select a novel that interested them and their group. Students were expected to read a certain amount each week and arrive at Book Club prepared with ideas, word work and reflections. Through Book Club, students developed their inferring skills. They also developed their speaking and listening skills by contributing to discussions, listening to the ideas of others and presenting alternative points of view.

Writing

Students developed multiple stories of their own this term. The imagined forbidden forests, potions classes, enchanted tree houses and wild school excursions. They worked hard to create stories that were creative, organised, detailed, descriptive and clearly communicated. Some classes took inspiration from their chemistry experiments but added a magical twist. See below for Caitlin’s introduction to her story The Corio School of Witchcraft, Wizardry and Sorcery.

"I bounce into class with my new trampoline shoes. As I slow down I have a clear view of the magical shelves. They are full of mesmerising ingredients. I sit down at my desk, with my cauldron, empty mason jars ready to get filled, beakers and a stove… "

NAIDOC week.

It was a joy to see students celebrating NAIDOC week this term. To celebrate NAIDOC week this year students engaged in a variety of activities and experiences. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Naidoc week was also marked with a special assembly run by representatives from our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Peoples community.

Swimming

We were lucky to get some balmy weather for our swimming program this year. It was pleasing to see so many students participating and learning new skills in the pool.

Year 6 program in the last week of term has been a great success.

Getting Ready for 1:1

Peacock Campus are trialling some brand new furniture and tables to help students work practices with their chrome books next year.

There are higher tables, computer booths and computer trays as well as planning boards. Check them out.

All staff from the Northern Bay 3-6 Learning Community would like to thank you for your support of the children and their learning this year. It has been a pleasure to work with them. We wish you a safe and happy break and look forward to welcoming you back in 2021.

Lenovo 300C Chrome book.

As Mr Diamond shared on his page, he College is introducing our new Student 1:1 Device Program in 2021.  This means that all Year 3 to Year 10 students will be receiving a new Lenovo 300e Chromebook 2nd Gen, which will be collected with the Student Book Pack on Friday 22 January.  Excitedly, these $400 devices, which also come with a carry bag, will be at no cost to families.

Information on safe use and student expectations will be shared at Book Collection Day and at the beginning of the 2021 school year.

Student Work

The Mystical Book

The weekend. Finally I can go study without being interrupted. My friends, Irene and Jennie asked me if I wanted to hang out with them at the Corio Village. But I declined. I make my way to the library, where I spend most of my time during school. I push open the big oak doors creating a creaking noise. A few eyes glare in my direction. “Sorry.” I shrug and apologise quietly. I walk to an empty table, place my books on top and start searching for books for my potions class. In the library, it is very dim and it smells like mint and daisies. Only a few are there since most of the students think studying is boring, but not in my opinion. There are also lots of floating candles and lanterns. Owls gaze down upon us to make sure no one is talking. I grab a few books before making my way back to my table.
On the way I see a door, a door I’ve never seen before. There is a large sign saying ‘FORBIDDEN ZONE! DO NOT ENTER!’ . I slightly tilt my head confused before my eyes widen in delight. ‘Adventure!’ I think to myself. I look around making sure no one is near. I go to twist the door knob but it was locked. ‘Dang it’ I reach into my pocket and grab my wand. “Alohomora”. Click. The door opens. As soon as I push the door open, a wave of dust enters my nose, making me sneeze. I shake my head before entering the room. Then I shut the door behind me quietly. It’s pitch black. The silence grew as I kept quiet. I let out a breath that I didn’t know I was holding. I walk to a bookshelf, running my fingertips along the spines of the books. I stop at a particular section of the library. ‘Myths & Mystical beasts’.
Out of curiosity I decide to open a dusty old book. ‘The 3-headed Phoenix’. I scoff at the title. ‘This is stupid’ I think to myself. I open the book and slowly the book started to shake. Then the shelves began to shake as well. The books on the shelves starts to fall like pouring rain. Suddenly a large, fierce, red and yellow 3-headed Phoenix emerged from the book! I try to scream but no noise comes out. I was frozen. The book fell from my hands. The Phoenix began to shriek. I quickly covered my ears as I fell to the ground. I slowly stood up. “Get away from me!” I yell at the Phoenix but my sentence angered him.
He starts to scream and began to zoom at me. ”I definitely messed up.” I whisper to myself. So I run. I run as fast as I could, not looking back. His wings began to knock over shelves as he was chasing me. I tried to find the door but I couldn’t. The Phoenix starts to get closer and closer. ‘Oh lord, this isn’t the way I wanted to die’. I was losing hope. But then I hear someone calling out to me. “Excuse me! Who is in here?! Where are you!?” A familiar screechy voice calls out. ‘Professor Smith’ I smile to myself. “I’m here! Julia! I’m in here!” I yell out. “What are you doing here!” She shouted. “Just please help me!” I exclaimed. A few seconds later a bunch of vivid blue sparks blast near me. I dash into that direction. Then I saw a short, slouched figure in the distance.
“Quickly!” I hear her shout. I run out the doorway as Professor Smith slams the door shut. “Thank you,” I said panting. “Julia, there is a reason the sign is on the door” she scolds me. “I’m sorry” I apologise. “Once I get rid of the Phoenix, you have to clean the Forbidden Zone. By. Yourself.” she said sternly. I open my mouth but before I can say anything, she cuts me off immediately. “Don’t argue with me“ I just pout and nod my head. “Good.” she said  as she pats my head and walks away. “Maybe I should have gone with Jennie and Irene,” I said frowning.
