AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORT (AIS) VISIT FRIDAY 26 FEBRUARY
On Friday, we had an amazing visit from representatives of the AIS: Kaylia Stanton, Mitch Gourley and Jaime Roberts. Kaylia plays for the Melbourne Vixens and has represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games, Jaime competes in sprint kayaking and has been to multiple Olympics and Mitch is an alpine skier who has competed in the Paralympics.
During their visit, we learnt that most athletes have a dual career. A dual career means that they have two jobs – one as an athlete and another as something else that they are passionate in.
Kaylia’s dual career is a nutritionist whilst Jaime is a mining engineer. It interesting that some athletes do not compete full time and so need to have a second job as a source of income. This means they still earn money while they are not competing or training in their sport.
The difference between a Paralympian and an Olympian is that a Paralympian has a physical or mental disability. Both types of athletes represent their nation in their sport.
