STEM Report
Welcome back to school everyone, it has been great catching up with so many students in the classroom and in the yard this week. 2021 will be an exciting year at Roxburgh Park PS with new faces and lots of fun learning ahead of us. You will notice a few changes in the Science room this year with a greater incorporation of other learning areas including; Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
This term will see the opportunity to explore a range of new topics in the classroom as well as the continuation of special project groups and the introduction of lunchtime activities.
Prep (Foundation)
This term will see Prep students introduced to the concept of STEM learning. They will look at the role of a scientist and identify the safety equipment scientists use. Preps will also begin applying some introductory Science skills through the topic "Sorting and Mixing" where they begin grouping objects according to simple features such as size, colour and texture.
Grade 1
Students in Grade 1 will investigate the topic "What is it made from?", where they will use their body's 5 senses to identify and describe different physical materials. They will develop their vocabulary while describing features of different materials and apply their sorting skills when exploring natural and man-made objects.
Grade 2
This term, Grade 2 students will use their manipulation skills to tackle the topic "Bend it, Stretch it". In this unit of work, student's will investigate the properties of different materials and explore the way materials can be changed or altered. They will apply their sorting skills and record their observations using simple tables.
Grade 3
This term, students in Grade 3 will be exploring the topic titled "Melting Moments". They will investigate the 3 states of matter and explore what conditions cause changes to solids, liquids and gases. Students will develop their skills of prediction and begin justifying their thoughts and ideas.
Grade 4
Students in Grade 4 will explore the topic "It's a material world", where they will investigate the benefit of different synthetic and natural materials. Students will conduct tests and use observations to describe and make predictions about the usefulness of different materials.
Grade 5
This term, Grade 5 students will explore the topic, "Im a Survivor". Students will identify special features of living things and investigate how these adaptations allow organisms to survive in different environments. Students will further develop their research skills and begin to create their own deeper thinking investigation questions.
Grade 6
Students in Grade 6 will explore the topic, "Earth's place in space". Students will use a variety of digital and physical models to investigate the solar system's features and orbits. Students will use personal research to design their own solar system models and create deeper thinking investigation questions about the topic.
Bye for now.
Hope to see you all soon!
