Year 6 brings magic of Aladdin to the stage

Young performers took audience on a magic carpet ride.

An Arabian desert materialised at school recently when Year 6 students performed in 'a whole new world' with Aladdin.

Amazing dancing, singing and acting had the audience bopping along as they were transported to the streets of Agrabah. Great work by all on the performance, sets, costumes and music!

End-of-year festivities

It has been a busy but very productive Term 4 at St Mary's College, with the past fortnight, in particular, brimming with graduation ceremonies, final assemblies, Christmas concerts and end-of-year festivities.

Year 12 Leavers' Dinner - an evening to remember

Floor-length gowns in rich and bold jewel tones shimmered and sparkled at the Year 12 Leavers' Dinner on Friday 27 November.

Year 12 students, together with their partners and parents, gathered at the picturesque Glen Albyn Estate to mark the end of the cohort's tenure at St Mary's College.

The special evening was a well-earned celebration for the class of 2020 after a COVID-19 challenged year.

Guests enjoyed a three-course meal and music entertainment while soaking up the glitz and glamour of the night.

Thank you to Tracy Vagg Photography for capturing the night in photos.

Farewell to Year 2 boys

On Friday 27 November, the College celebrated the graduation of our young men in Year 2, who will be embarking on their new school journeys in 2021.

The boys were farewelled with a lovely liturgy and graduation ceremony in the Cathedral, followed by cupcakes on the front convent lawns.

We wish them a bright future and thank them for being a part of St Mary's College for the past four years.

Year 6 graduation

They began their school journeys as fresh-faced Kinders and Preps and on Friday 4 December, they graduated as kind, confident and courageous young women, ready for their next step onto Senior School.

Congratulations to our Year 6 graduating class on an amazing finish to the year!

The students, who were all dressed so beautifully in their party outfits, couldn't contain their excitement as they stepped into the Nagle Centre to find it magnificently decorated with fairy lights, table centrepieces and personalised cupcakes.

Christmas is in the air

On Monday 7 December, Prep to Year 9 students had the opportunity to wind down and celebrate with their peers at the College's annual Presentation Picnic at Dru Point.

Rounding out our end-of-term celebrations were the Junior School Christmas concerts, which provided no shortage of dancing, singing, acting and festive cheer.

Well done to all students and teachers for putting on such wonderfully entertaining performances to cap off the 2020 school year.

The hard work and achievements of Senior School students were acknowledged and celebrated at the College's Prize Giving ceremony, which was held today in the Nagle Centre.

Attendees were treated to a stunning performance by our Senior School Band, under the direction of Scott Weston (Learning Area Coordinator for the Arts and Director of Music). Congratulations to all prizewinners and to the students who performed.

If you missed the opportunity to watch the event online in real-time, the recording is available to view here

Choir gets into Christmas spirit

The lovely vocal stylings of the St Mary's College Choir will feature on ABC Hobart radio for the Christmas carols special this Thursday at 9.30am. Tune in and be sure to sing along! You can enjoy a preview of their performance here.

Along with some classic Christmas favourites, the choir will also perform a tune that is new to the acapella music scene, including a mash-up!

There's something special about the much-loved Christmas tradition of hearing Christmas carols sung with beautiful melody and grace. All you need is a cup of hot chocolate and a shortbread or gingerbread cookie and you're right in the spirit of the season!

Kindness in small packages

A special thank you to the Homerooms who created 24 care packs with toiletries in handbags to distribute to young women in need at the Annie Kenney Young Women's Shelter.

The shelter provides emergency accommodation and support to young people aged 13-20 years, who are experiencing homelessness or may be at risk of becoming homeless.

Year 9 students hand over the donated items to Belinda Clarke from CatholicCare.

While learning about the spirit of giving and social justice through the act of Christmas Giving, Year 3-4 students also made wonderful donations of toiletries for care packs to Annie Kenney this week.

Combined, these gifts will make someone's Christmas much brighter. Thank you to all students and their families for your kindness and generosity.

Deepening our faith through the Jesse tree

Year 10-11 students who participated in the Head Start program last week put 'Christ' back into 'Christmas' by making ornaments symbolising stories from the Bible, such as the Story of Creation and the Nativity.

Deeply-rooted in tradition, Jesse trees trace their origins back to medieval times when they were used to tell the stories of the Bible. On each day of advent, an ornament is placed on the tree, usually within a church.

The tree itself is a symbol of new life and beginnings. The St Mary's College Jesse tree can be viewed in the Reflection Garden.

Students rock out at concert

Sacred Heart Catholic School Geeveston brought their Junior and Senior bands to visit St Mary's College Junior School students and performed a range of rock favourites, from Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to LMFAO for all the party rockers.

Students had a great time dancing and singing along with the band, who got the crowd pumping. A few lucky students were even picked to ring the gong and conduct the band.

We enjoyed having a fellow Tassie school visit us, and we thank Glynis Devereux, Deputy Director Junior School, for organising the event for students.

Year 8s ask, 'who is Mary?'

The Year 8 Religious Education classes have recently been learning more about Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

Students were tasked with producing a piece of art which reflects how Mary is relevant and connected to contemporary Australian culture.

A selection of images created during this exercise are shared below. What fantastic and thought-provoking work!

RE undergoes a name change

Commencing in 2021, the Religious Education program in Years 5-10 will be renamed 'Life and Faith'.

Life and Faith is a subject which seeks to engage all learners in the search for meaning, developing skills of critical thinking and reflection in order to become people of hope who work for justice and peace in the world today. It uses the Good News for Living curriculum as a framework in order to explore core Christian beliefs, doctrines and practices, as well as engaging imaginatively, respectfully and critically with the major world religions, spiritual traditions, philosophies and worldviews.

Life and Faith encourages students to grow in fullness of life within a conscious, transformative relationship with God through Jesus Christ and in the Holy Spirit.

A trip down memory lane

An excursion to the Soldier's Memorial Avenue at Queens Domain offered the Year 9 History class an insight into the lives and stories of the soldiers who died in the Great War 1914-18.

The race to get muddy

The finish line to the end of the school year is here - but it's a muddy one! Sporting brightly coloured tutus, Senior School students tackled a mud run and obstacle course challenge during their Activity Day yesterday.

Year 7-9 students participated in a jam-packed program of events on the day, including karate and dance classes, a mindfulness session on managing anxiety and making hampers for Annie Kenney.

Exploring modern art

Artists in Year 8 drew inspiration from the colours, forms and techniques of modern art to create their own masterpieces.
