Working Bee Help

Thanks to the many families who attended the working bees on the two Saturdays prior to the Spring Fair. Your contribution was much appreciated in making the school look wonderful.

***These two parents were part of a team who spent a whole morning weeding along the front fence and planted many new plants to enhance the Yallabirrang Story Fence.

Zero Waste Initiative

STEPS TOWARDS ZERO WASTE A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

With thanks to Katie’s Class 5, Tim’s Class 10, and Aaron’s Class 7, and supported by the Green Team, our actions to reduce waste at the Spring Fair were a huge success!

Nearly every food stall had re-usable options available, and stalls like the coffee cart, fruit salad and curry stall used mostly these, rather than single use items.

We used only 5% the number of disposable cups compared to past years (a reduction of some 900+ cups) through this practice.

A dedicated Wash Against Waste station helped educate people, and kept the cycle of clean dishes available to food stalls and ensured adherence to food safety standards with sanitising.

Our end of day red rubbish bins had less than half the amount of landfill compared to previous, with good uptake and sorting of recycling (which were overflowing).  We diverted nearly 1000L of compostable matter (food scraps, paper napkins, single use Biopak plates/cutlery) to Corio Waste Management where the industrial processed compost then goes to improving soils on farms in central Victoria.

We received many positive comments from the school and wider community around this initiative.    We have some ideas around improving the uptake and further reducing food waste for next year and would welcome any further input from the community, or if anyone would like to be involved going forward, please contact Lauren by email laurend11@protonmail.com

This shows where there is a system change, individual actions are easy to follow through on. I can see this being integrated into our fair and school culture. Well done everyone!!
