Council Update
Castlemaine Secondary College School Council would like to extend its support to CSC students, and students around the world, who have been taking action on climate change.
It is clear that the world is in the midst of a climate emergency, and urgent action needs to be taken.
Many CSC students feel passionate about climate action, having witnessed some of the effects of climate change, such as drought and coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef. Taking public, collective action has been an important way for young people to be a part of our democracy and influence decision makers.
Some CSC students have received awards for the work they have done in relation to climate change and the leadership they have shown to their peers, and in the community.
School Council fully endorses the leadership, creativity and voice demonstrated by CSC students in bringing the issue of climate change to the attention of politicians and the general public. Council supports these students’ conviction that decision makers should exercise their responsibility and take urgent action in response to climate change.
School Council meets at least 8 times a year to make decisions on policy, finance and planning. Each meeting we approve camps and excursions and hire of our facilities. We also work in a number of subcommittees or portfolio areas.
The Profile and Communications portfolio has been working on a Communications Strategy for CSC – providing advice and knowledge to the school to improve communications to the parents, students and community. The group, led by parent Maria Angeloni, has just completed and launched a new website for CSC.
The website (designed mainly by parents and students) will contain all of the information we access regularly, as well as providing greater opportunities for interactivity and linking in social media. The website fits into with our new branding and will hopefully represent the level of excellence we are striving for at CSC.
The Buildings and Grounds subcommittee is working with the Sport Support Group to upgrade the ovals and other outside sporting facilities. An exploratory bore has been sunk to water the ovals, and we will pursue funding for setting up an irrigation system as well as redressing the ovals. Funding is also being sought to cover the outside basketball court.
Please stay tuned for information on a working bee to help with the outdoor education space and garden.
