Junior School Report

It has most certainly been an exciting and enjoyable start to the year in the Junior School, with Term 1 providing plenty of events and activities for students to participate in. These include:

  • Year 7 Camp
  • A visit from author Robert Newton
  • Athletics Carnival
  • Brainstorm Production
  • Growth Mindset seminar
  • Elevate Education seminar
  • KIOSC Excursion

These activities have provided students with an opportunity to showcase their knowledge, understanding and skills whilst becoming active contributors to our community. It is fantastic to see our students demonstrating exemplary behaviour whilst representing our College with pride.

Here are some reflections from students about the plethora of activities they have participated in:

“In term 1 the school held its annual athletics day carnival. All students dressed up in house colours and it was good to see the year 12 students dressed up in their costumes. It was a very fun day for everyone.”

Melissa Butler

“In term 1 we learned about growth mindset with Mr Griffin. He taught us about how to change our thinking from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and gave us some tools to help develop our skills.” Direin Weerasooriya

“Elevate education visited us at school and spoke about studying and different ways of how to study effectively. They explained how important it was to have a good environment to study in.”

Michael Fankhauser

“Robert Newton, the author of the novel ‘Runner’, came and presented to us during class. Talking to him and asking him questions really allowed us to have a greater understanding of his book in preparing for writing our upcoming essay.”

Brooke Michaliades

“Throughout the term, we have had plenty of events like KIOSC, Athletics day and Brainstorm Production. I have personally enjoyed all of these events as they have helped me to get the best out of my abilities in school.”

Quinn Carty

“The year 7 camp was the highlight of my term at Scoresby. It was so much fun and we did lots of different activities which gave me the chance to make new friends. The transition from primary to secondary school has been a lot easier than I was expecting.”

Maddelyn Crennan

“My favourite part of the year 7 camp was the abseiling! It was funny watching Miss Phibbs and Mr Eddy try to abseil too!  All the workers and leaders were very humble and very helpful.” Charlee McCafferty

Kiosc Excursion

Recently, the Year 8 students of Scoresby Secondary College went to Swinburne College two times, once on the 27 February and 22 March.  On the 27 February we learnt about three different things through out the day along with doing fun and engaging activities with our home groups and science teachers.  The first activity we did that day was all about your skill on circuits.  We learnt what parts a circuit had.  Everyone got to work in pairs of two.   Working together to connect the battery to the lever and then last into the source that we were powering, after having a little fun we went out into their very well mannered courtyard and had recess before heading back in and inside to do some learning on how to try and make something go the way you want it to.   We got to make a metre high stack of marble tracks, my group including Paige Morgan and Rebecca Edwards, were successful and were able to keep the marble on its intended areas.  We set out for lunch after the session was over, we ate lunch and went back in for our last symposium for the day.

Our classes intentions were to program a robot to stick to the black lines and not the tables.  After we had learnt to do that we set another success criteria.  To be able to keep it nice and smooth without it going off of the line.  Almost like how you would drive a car, straight and smooth on the road.   Nonetheless I personally think every time we do KIOSC it is a very thrilling and educating day and or activity.  After we are done for the day we do a self assessment survey telling the staff how we think we went.  I greatly want to thank the staff at KIOSC for helping us learn all the new things and especially making it fun too.

On 22 March, all Year 8 students walked to Swinburne and we did our little orientation before moving towards our first activity for the interesting day ahead. The very first activity we did was learning about wind turbines and how they can help us make a stop or slow down the usage of toxic chemicals for electricity, such as coal which has caused major crisis’ such as global warming, anyways we tested three different sizes and amounts for the wind turbines, then we turned our fans on high and tested for the voltage and current to equal the power.  Afterwards we ate recess and headed back in for our second lesson. Everyone got to go in groups of two, building LEGO stands for the solar panel which would soon be used to power our robotic cars, but unfortunately not many of us got to do the testing for the car, but it was still a great experience learning about how many ways we can use solar panels and how we need to set them up to be most successful.

After sitting in the peaceful courtyard, having lunch, we all went back inside to go for our last hour of learning. We learnt all the laws of Automated drones, we learnt many rules like that we are not authorised to film any person besides yourself within a 30 metre radius or you could get fined, after doing a quick test on that, we were able to fly the drones. One by one every team got to fly it around and see if we could land them on the landing pads or even go under the bridges. As usual we did a self assessment from the day we had and walked back to school.

Firstly I’d like to say thank you to Ms Burke and Mrs Wood for being able to get us there and back and giving us the great days we had!

I’d also like to dearly thank the staff members at Swinburne for setting up and planning the two amazing days of exciting learning we did, I think overall KIOSC is a great program and I hope you learnt a little bit about it.

Thank you very much

As we head into the last two weeks of a busy term, it is important to remember that students should remain diligent in their class work and homework. The upcoming parent / teacher / student conferences provide the perfect opportunity for students to reflect on their progress in Term 1, and develop goals and strategies to continue to show growth throughout the school year.

With this in mind, we wish students and their families a safe and well deserved holiday break.
